Both Senators Merkley and Wyden named to the Budget Conference Committee

After the government shutdown and debt ceiling fight was resolved (for now), one of the agreements was that the House and Senate would finally meet in a conference committee for the first time in years.
Just a dozen Democratic Senators (and three Democratic House members) will represent the blue team. The good news for Oregon is that both Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley are in that elite group.
Among other local priorities, this surely has implications for things like the ongoing effort to square up the county payments issue.
Senator Wyden has already started talking about using these negotiations to work on improving Medicare for the chronically ill, a set of solutions he unveiled this past summer.
Senator Merkley has been quite outspoken on his opposition to any plans to privatize or cut Social Security, something often discussed by another member of the conference committee, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan.
Stay tuned.
