From Bill Kennemer, the Stupidest Idea Ever.
Kari Chisholm
Gee, the filibuster is so awesome that Rep. Bill Kennemer (R-Oregon City) would like to implement it in the Oregon Legislature too. From the O's Jeff Mapes:
If you've ever wanted to empower the minority in the Oregon Legislature, Rep. Bill Kennemer, R-Oregon City, is your man.
The veteran legislator is sponsoring a proposed constitutional amendment that would require a two-thirds vote to pass any bill in the Legislature. ...
Kennemer's measure, House Joint Resolution 27, would give the minority a tool even more powerful than the filibuster in the U.S. Senate. In that chamber it takes a three-fifths majority -- 60 votes -- to move any legislation of substance.
I just don't get it. In a democracy, power flows to those who get the most votes. Sure, political minorities should be respected and included in the process -- but the only way that democracy works is when the people vote, they get what they want.
So my question is: Why does Bill Kennemer hate democracy?
