OR-1: Dems fire up the base; send Bonamici off to battle
Carla Axtman
Thursday morning at Portland State University, Democrats held a "unity" event in support of newly minted Democratic Congressional primary winner Suzanne Bonamici. After what has been widely considered a polite and civil primary campaign, opponents Brad Avakian and Brad Witt offered their congratulations and did their work to fire up the base. Congressman Earl Blumenauer and Congressman Kurt Schrader were also on hand to remind Democrats of the importance of keeping the seat in Democratic hands. Both also provided barbs about the current atmosphere in DC and the strong need for an experienced Oregon legislator to come in and get to work.
These types of post primary events have become tradition for the Democratic Party of Oregon. Presumably they begin the process of unruffling feathers and setting everyone on the same path toward supporting the primary winner.
Below are my images from the event to give you a flavor of the goings on.

Thanks for the great slide show, Carla! And that weird guy trying to hide from your camera was just a bit shy -- I talked with him afterwards.

Thanks, Carla. I couldn't make it there myself, so I appreciate the photos. Perfect too in classic-journalism black and white. LP

Thanks for the pix, Carla. I am glad the other Dem. Reps were there for support. It would be good if those same Reps had unity about protecting Medicare and Soc. Sec. as Kurt Schrader makes front page news in the StatesmanJournal for supporting an increase in the Medicare and Soc. Sec. age. Apparently people in their sixties don't need income or health care according to Kurt. Kurt will be well provided for courtesy of you and me, but women and men in their sixties need more austerity to go out and find and job and forget about health care. I hope that Susan Bonamici will not follow Kurt's example. (Susan Bonamici has an auspicious name BTW, means "good friends" in Italian.) http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20111107/NEWS/111070331/Schrader-part-cut-seeking-coalition?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|News|s
