David Edwards withdraws re-election bid
Kari Chisholm
State Representative David Edwards (D-Hillsboro) has decided to end his bid for re-election, citing health concerns for his wife and a desire to spend time with his family. (He's not resigning from the legislature, however, and will serve through the end of the year.)
Democratic precinct committee people will select a new nominee. Edwards immediately endorsed Doug Ainge for the spot. Ainge is a well-liked and longtime teacher, who may be best known as the father of New York Jets quarterback Erik Ainge (and the brother of Danny Ainge, the former Blazer player and current Boston Celtics president of basketball operations.)
The Republican nominee is Hillsboro attorney Shawn Lindsay.
Our best wishes to the Edwards family and here's to hopes for a speedy recovery.

That's a big loss for the Oregon legislature and all Oregonians.
Rep. Edwards is one of Oregon's most forthright, smart, skilled legislators. My thoughts are with him and his family.

David Edwards is a smart, talented, and big hearted public servant. He will be sorely missed. Oregon is better for his contributions and his family's sacrifices. Best wishes to the exceptional Edwards family.

David Edwards has been an incredible asset and advocate for his district and for the people of Oregon. His erudition and intelligence attracted Republican attacks that he was "out of step" with his district, yet the voters sent him back to Salem in 2008 with a resounding majority over "favorite son" Andy Duyck. He achieved his electoral success by dint of hard work and lots of shoe leather. His work as negotiator on the budget will be sorely missed. I wish him and his family the best.

Rep. David Edwards has demonstrated a remarkable ability during his two terms to cut to the heart of problems, forge consensus, and offer solutions that work for Oregonians. He's served his district and our state well.
Doug Ainge would also be an amazing legislator. Doug has taught and coached in Washington County for 31 years. He's a graduate of North Eugene H.S., Lane Community College, and Linfield College -- each with distinguished athletic careers. He's been a strong OEA leader and an active campaign volunteer. He's been married for almost 35 years to Diane, a dental hygienist. They have two children: Kimberly (NW Marketing Manager for Fix Auto in Portland) and Erik (Quarterback for the New York Jets).
And, yes, Doug's younger brother is Danny Ainge, former Trailblazer and current President of Basketball Operations for the Celtics.
David Edwards leaves big shoes to fill, but Doug Ainge is up for the challenge.

It was an honor to serve with David Edwards in the 2007 session. He is an exceptional legislator who significantly raised the level of discussion with his intelligent floor speeches. He will be especially missed by the Washington County delegation. I thank him for his service and wish the entire Edwards family my very best.
