Lynn Howe - "I'm a Nurse, not a politician."
Paulie Brading
Lynn Howe kicked off her campaign for a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives at her new campaign headquarters yesterday. Howe is running against Republican Sal Esquivel in Oregon House District 6, which encompasses the entire city of Medford.
Her remarks to an enthusiastic crowd of supporters drew applause when she said,
"Back in October 2008 the Medford Mail Tribune chose not to endorse the incumbent State Representative. They wrote, "Sal Esquivel seems out of touch with the biggest problems facing Medford." Howe continued, "Just two years ago, Representative Sal Esquivel spoke about the economy to the Medford Mail Tribune Editorial Board. He told them the economy was stable. Yes, he said the economy was stable. Well just look at us now, two years later. Two years ago when I was tirelessly ringing doorbells all over Medford, I heard from my neighbors that the two top concerns were lost jobs and the morgage crisis. So why didn't our Representative know that? How many more people are unemployed since Esquivel began his third term just last January? How many more people have lost their homes since then? Why has the number of homeless kids attending Medford schools jumped to over 500?
Our incumbent State Representative is now seeking a fourth term. But he still can't demonstrate a real understanding of the hardships faced by Medford families or the state of our economy, Hundreds more Medford families have lost their homes but Representative Esquivel is still sitting in the People's House in Salem. Thousands more have lost their jobs...but Representative Esquivel still has his job in Salem. I said earlier, I'm a nurse, not a politician. Like any good nurse, I know how to check for vital signs, You listen to the heart. You put your finger on the pulse and let me tell you there's an emergency in our community.
"I am convinced," Howe continued, "the out-of-touch poloticians who helped get us into this mess have no ideas to get us out of this mess. How many times must the good people of Medford go through this? Do we have to go through the same state budget mess again? Keeping things as they are in Medford isn't working. We need fresh ideas, new approaches - and most of all - new leadership here in Medford. We can cure the problems facing our community and our state....but it's going to take a nurse to do it - not a politician."

My least favorite thing is when politicians claim not to be a politician. If you aren't one, why would I have any faith that you know what you are doing?

That's a great way to describe the current House majority.

Back to what Karol asked... I am wary of "non-politicians" as well, as they seem to outsource the politicking, and often end up signing off on really hacky behavior; worse than if they were personally involved in the decision. If the decision is to run apolitically, that would be pretty interesting. Either way, I find the question an interesting one.
This is offensive. "Danny" was just dumb. Dumb is when Sarah Palin can tell you how stupid you are. There's the woman for you to call and share some quality time.

Sal deserves the competition.
If she is smart, she will hit as many doorsteps as possible, regardless of registration, rather than buying into the whole "targeting" idea.
We took our district away from the Republicans back some years ago (first Dem. ever elected in the district) with just that approach.

Vote for you just because you're a nurse - and not the incumbent? I'd like to hear some specifics about your 'fresh ideas' and 'new approaches', Nurse Howe. Just because they may be 'fresh' and 'new' doesn't automatically mean your ideas and approaches are any better than the 'stale' and 'old'... they could be even worse!
