Two Great Things You Can Do This Weekend

Steve Novick

Here are two great things you can do this weekend:

First, you can call 503-234-0444 and say you want to sign up to canvass or phone bank for Yes on 66 and 67. We have lots and lots of terrific volunteers, but we need more. We need you. We need you to call people up, or knock on their doors, and tell them this ia a very important election and will they please please fill out that ballot and get it in the mail? If you could join us canvassing this Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, it would be especially cool.

Second, you can read this article in the New Yorker about a sportswriter in Philadelphia who invented this idea of the "America Bowl," in which he marches up the 44 Super Bowls (counting the pending 2010 Super Bowl) against the 44 Presidents -- in order - to determine which was better. A great way for sports/politics/history fans to waste time. (The guy decided the Joe Namath Super Bowl lost to Thomas Jefferson in a squeaker because Jefferson "wanted it more.") As I was reading this, I felt rather nostalgiac for Bill Clinton; it's a perfect Clinton thing. I'm sure that as soon as he read or heard about this, his first thought was "what an awesome idea"; then, a split second later, before getting anywhere near the relevant part of the article, he thought: "Damn it, I'm up against Giants-Patriots, the Eli Manning Miracle - I can't win!"; then he thought, "well, losing to Giants-Patriots is no shame, even Lincoln would have had a rough time against that one, if I were 43 I still might have lost to Steelers - Cardinals because that was a good game, too, but not an iconic game, that would have hurt a lot worse"; and then he started thinking about which Super Bowl he'd most like to be identified with, maybe the Super Bowl Shuffle Bears-Patriots game?, not an iconic game as such but a great end to a great season ... OK, I'm spending too much time on this. Please phone bank and canvass!

I did two things as well:

I read the Oregonian Editorial Boards second vote no opinion entitled "Beyond a No Vote"

    and

I read Phil Knight's op-ed where he says "There are words to describe what we are doing with 66 and 67: It is called a death spiral."

I have just one recommendation: Stimulate the economy by buying a Sunday Oregonian tomorrow and reading both.

Hey ThinkOregon, did you read the part where they were advocating for the legislature to come back in February and pass new taxes?

Doesn't that seem to be directly opposed to your belief that spending is out of control or whatever nonsense you're spreading now?

Cheesus Cripes... first things first. We've managed to persuade quite a few folks so far re: M66/67... If we continue our reasoned, thoughtful dialogue on spending and tax reform, who knows... I think folks are beginning to connect the dots between their interests and those of Oregon employers. I think Oregonians are interested in Economic Sustainability because it's the socially responsible thing to do.

Hey ThinkOregon, you left out the part where Phil Knight said "Measures 66 and 67 should be labeled Oregon's Assisted Suicide Law II"

American footie is a load of shit. So's yer "great man" whorship.

The vote is definitely important. Your future turns on it, Steve.

"read the Oregonian Editorial Boards second vote no opinion entitled "Beyond a No Vote"

I can just hear Carla now; "Douchebags; there is no future beyond a 'no' vote!"

Love the way Urban Dictionary lets you put defs on shirts, and such. If this measure fails- and how could it have possibly, without Dems managing to piss off most their allies- I will see you get a tee-shirt!

Editorials post-vote will be interesting. If it loses, I think we'll being seeing a political obituary in the O! Looks like the M66 article count will go past 50! Let's see how many people with a brain are still reading after your noble self-sacrifice. And how is that not a PAC?

Here at The MacDonald Group, (a Progressive Oregon PAC dedicated to political parody through minimal spending and Web-based political hyperbole propaganda dissemination), we plan to spend the day re-grooving "Paula's Bakery" into yet another Rich-Tweaking YouTuber parody to join "Obama Says" and Please Remit.
