Tom Hughes announces run for Metro Prez on Facebook
Carla Axtman
Former Hillsboro Mayor Tom Hughes announced last night that he's running for Metro President. I'd heard that Hughes was considering throwing his hat in. What's fascinating is that I didn't read the announcement in the O or the Argus. I saw it on Facebook:
I really enjoy seeing candidates trying to make good use of social media. Hopefully Hughes won't turn out to be annoying with it--but will use it to inform us of where he stands and how he'd like to lead the Metro Council.
FYI: I'm still studying the candidates for this race, so I haven't chosen anyone and at this point remain neutral. Others running for the seat (so far) are Rex Burkholder and Bob Stacey. Both are also on Facebook.

This certifies his Napolean complex.

What's so cool about announcing on Facebook? My first guess is that he just likes getting to approve who can speak, like twitter, and unlike a blog.
In fact, can you name any other way he could announce and have 100% control over the message, format, attendees, and responses?
Makes perfect sense in light of the first response.

It's cool because it's using a new tool to talk about what he wants to do--without the filters of a journalist tilting the message. And what's more cool: people can talk back to him directly and he can answer them directly, if he chooses. Which honestly, tells me at least as much (if not more) than any story in a newspaper.

He can't have total control over the message on Facebook and Twitter. That's part of what's awesome. I can Retweet what he's saying and add my own commentary if I like. I can do the same on FB.

That is news to all of us who have had blog posts deleted or have been banned from blogs.

Maybe he can also provide balance to a metro govt that wants to shove us all into tiny yard-less infill homes and make us dependent on an inadequate public transit system.
Maybe he won't "go by streetcar!"

I met Tom Hughes a few times and he seems very down to earth. This will give the folks who live in Metro but not in Portland a chance to vote for someone with a different point of view. Should be an interesting campaign.

I am waiting to see what his positions are but I am excited to have a Washington County voice in the race.

You block someone, how do they have any say? I can show up at a public speech, regardless of what you think. FB and Tweeter require that the person delivering the message "approve" of you. That's not the level of control every pol dreams of?
Practice is BO blocked my FB following them because, instead of high fiving a victory, I commented, "let's see what happens when they're in office". Yeah, it's the "new media" that attracts. I predict in 10 that things will have evolved and the banal facebook will be like your old mood ring.

You can be critical of a politician on FB and Twitter too. When you join a fan page--you're not "approved"--you just join. For Twitter--you can follow anyone without them having to "approve" you. Yes, you can be blocked down the road--but you can be removed from a public speech, too.
