Oh crap.
Carla Axtman
If you're a Portland Water Bureau customer situated west of the Willamette River, boil your tap water.
Yech.

Now THIS is core politics, "one knows the faith". Fidem scit! (Have to use "ecclesiastical pronunciation").
"Relax, don't worry; have a homebrew".
So, is the assumption in third world countries (or Portland), that the beer was brewed with sterilized HOH, or do the hops, alcohol and O2 scrubbing purify it? I assume the former, but do wonder...
There's a concrete example of "green economy". The oils in hops have some amazing antifungal, antibacterial, and amenorrhea mitigating properties. Biotech has big startup costs, but these kinds of "alternative pharmacology" could jump start firms that could then move into more high tech areas. Already have the hops. Already have the demand. And if we don't mark these words, someone will. Probably someone in New Zealand.
Would you rather I made this about Sam?
I was looking at the praise we got for being "America's Cleanest City" as chosen by Reader's Digest, and on the page specifically about Portland's number one status they list a few of the problems Portland faces. One of the issues they mention is that our sewer system is ancient and poorly designed and it combines storm runoff with sewage in the same piping system.
Commissioner Sam Adams recently highlighted the old sewer system in his blog. He has some great history and images and mentions that "Much of Portland's sewer infrastructure is close to 100 years old."
And it was finished two months ahead of schedule (west side big pipe). But of course, we can't ask him about that, because he doesn't blog anymore. Managing the Virgil Breedlove, Jr. affair is much more important. No, that didn't impact his governing much.
Can't think of anymore reasonable angles on this one.

So, how does one know about this if they're not perched in front of the boob tube? Over here in Oregon's #1 city for crime, far to the east, I have to wonder. Thanks for the post!
Imagine if this were 72 hours earlier!

I am sure glad government run health care is on it's way. That way when the government shits in my water and I get sick, I can go to government run hospitals to get well. What a great system! I sure hope more democrats get elected.

We found out about this through Sam Adams' Twitter feed, and then many other people retweeting it. Which is a great example of how to utilize Twitter in public agencies.
But then I found out the Portland Water Bureau has a Twitter account. Their last post: "will be FB/Twitter free until Monday 11-30 due to Thanksgiving."
It sounds like that agency doesn't understand the concept of Twitter. Is there no one at the Bureau that has the login information to post a warning?

I read where the first positive test came back on Wednesday and the announcement for the "Boil Water" was not made until after a second test result also came back positive for E. Coli on Saturday.
Is it SOP at The Portland Water Bureau and most other city water Bureau's to wait for a second consecutive positive test before sounding an alarm? If so, does this policy unreasonably place the health and welfare of city water users in jeapardy?

Definitely puts another twist on my comment Imagine if this were 72 hours earlier!
So, how much was about not having people curse the water board on Thxgiving Day? Our own species of water boarding?

Takes 24 hours to grow the culture. Second test is to rule out a false positive.

Peri Brown - Had to do some searching to figure out WTF you were talking about. Looks like you're taking climategate pretty hard. I don't blame you - it sucks. Now, what will happen to big government re-distribution programs like Cap and Trade? You'll have to work extra hard now to get the votes. What a bitch, just when you thought the sheeple were all on board with man-made climate change.

So after a re-hydration for last night via said water, not to mention a couple of cups of coffee prepared with said water, I strap myself in for a 700 mile drive to San Jose. I learn from KPOJ that I shouldn't have done this. Oops, should have remembered that when visiting primitive environs, one should always boil tap water before use. Fortunately, no ill effects.
