Civil War!

Civilwar

There's never been a Civil War game like the one this week. With a nationally-televised Thursday-night game, the Ducks and Beavers will face off - and the winner goes to the Rose Bowl. (And takes home the Platypus Trophy, too!)

There isn't an option for people who feel the way I do: why the heck are people who have never been to either OSU or UO, or have relatives there, so wrapped up in the sports programs of schools they have no connection to? It's irritating if you take into consideration that the two universities in Portland both have viable sports programs and could use the favorable media coverage and community dollars.

  • (Show?)

The two Portland schools suck at football, which is the season we're in. UP does not suck at soccer however, and when the lady Pilots won the championship early this decade they got plenty of coverage and a parade. (They lost last week in the semis this year, aborting bigger coverage).

When both of the state's two major universities are playing to be on probably the 2nd most familiar bowl game of the year, before a national TV audience and millions of dollars on the line, that's news.

    Go Beavs!

But Kari, what's with the lack of coverage on the OSU basketball game this weekend? I heard they had some hecklers seated directly behind the team...

Kari, are you sure about the Platypus Trophy? In our research for the Wikipedia article about it, it seemed that the athletic directors ultimately decided against restoring a prominent role to the trophy. (See the last paragraph in the linked article. It's possible there have been more recent developments we haven't tracked down.)

This decision, if accurate, totally baffles me. It seems any athletic director would be drawn to the marketing opportunities attached to such a compelling story.

The other night I told the story to a college football fan I found myself sitting next to in Newton, Mass; he had never heard of the Civil War game before, but he was fascinated by the story of the platypus. I guarantee he'll remember the rivalry in the future.

Seems like a massive opportunity to raise the national profile of the Oregon and Oregon State football programs is being ignored here. (again, unless I've missed a recent development.)

Nationally televised for free? Not only not a problem, but worth some free ad. time! Of course we won't mention that a perfectly good tradition, like having it last week, was hurled in the crapper to placate the broadcaster...

Beavs will be doing radio play by play for free, like most of the Pac 10, excluding OU. And they don't think that affects voting on public bonds?

So, usually a neutral, or a bowl puller, I'll be a beav this year. Karma, I guess.

Every fall, like a werewolf under the full moon, I surprise all my politically, ecologically, spiritually correct friends by turning into a rabid football nut, until the last tick of the Super Bowl, at which point I return to normalcy... so... Go Ducks! Though I reserve my enmity for the SEC, not other PAC-10 teams...

Sadly I learned this little ditty in the third grade Sung to the tune of the Oregon Duck fight song:

OSU our pants are off to you Beaver bastards - Sons of bitches too You drive your farm machines We'll screw your beauty queens OSU F*** You

The way I have heard it...

OSU our pants are off to you, Bad in sports and academics too, We'll screw your beauty queens, While you drive your farm machines, At OSU - screw you! See the team go tearing down the field, With cow manure hanging on their heels, Hell, hell, hell, hell, It's really hell at OSU!

    And for equal time...

Here's to our old alma mater, Where the men of iron are found, In the bushes with the co-eds, Making love upon the ground, (Uhh! Uhh!) This goes on till early morning, When the cops break up the fun, (Oh my!) It's a military wedding, For the sons of Oregon!

Who cares who wins, as long as there is national attention about something from the state other than the political norm.

I'm pretty old. Lots of schools have closed. The best that's left of our rivalry is, All hail my alma mater, Thy blue and gold I see, But where stood my alma mater, There's now an A&P!

So is it intrastate politeness, or are there no really good jokes about the Ducks choking? Seems like muskrat love would be loaded with ammunition...

All you need to know about Ducks fans can be seen looking at the official site's season summary. They get the Pat Ryan Award for Telling People Things They Probably Can't Figure Out for the "W" or "L" after the score.

I heard when they resodded the field they had to keep yelling to the students doing the work, "green side up"!
