Update 2:53PM: The House Majority Leader's Office now has a press release on Hoyle's appointment (not online yet):

Hoyle Appointed to House District 14 Lane County Commissioners Appoint Her Unanimously to Fill Edwards’ Seat

Oregon House Democrats welcome Val Hoyle to the House of Representatives after she was unanimously chosen by Lane County Commissioners to succeed former Rep. Chris Edwards in Lane County’s District 14 representing West Eugene, Santa Clara and Junction City. Edwards is now a State Senator who was recently chosen to replace former Senator Vicki Walker.

Currently the Director of Lane County United Way 100% Access Program, Hoyle served as a legislative assistant and policy director to State Senator Floyd Prozanski who represents parts of Douglas and Lane counties. Hoyle also has a strong business background in international business and formerly served as chair of the Federal District Export Council of Oregon.

Hoyle said she is committed to continuing the strong representation Edwards provided the district, and that many of their priorities are very similar.

“House District 14 benefited greatly from Sen. Chris Edwards’ leadership. I am thrilled to be able to work with him in his new role and will follow his lead in fighting for our community needs: affordable, appropriate and accessible health care, more stable funding for our schools and attracting good paying jobs to our district and our state,” said Hoyle. “The job of being a State Representative is a great responsibility, an incredible honor and a challenge that I look forward to meeting by working hard and listening to my constituents.”

A member of numerous local organizations, Hoyle, her husband, Stephen, and their two children Aidan and Deirdre, live in West Eugene.

“Val is a great fit for House District 14," said Sen. Edwards. "She will serve the people of West Eugene, Santa Clara, and Junction City very well. I call on her for opinion and advice as I work on issues for my constituents. I can’t think of a more seamless transition for my constituents than Val moving into this new role for which she is extremely well qualified.”

Democratic Majority Leader Mary Nolan echoed those sentiments.

“Val brings a strong work ethic, a great set of skills and a strong desire to serve the people of Lane County as their new State Representative. We are excited to welcome her as a part of the Democratic majority in the Oregon House,” said Nolan.

Hoyle will be sworn in on September 29.

Sources viewing the Lane County Commission meeting to replace newly minted State Senator Chris Edwards for House District 14 are telling me the vote is cast. It's it's definitely Val Hoyle.

I'm told the vote to appoint Hoyle to the seat was unanimous.

Hoyle is expected to be seated as the State Representative from House District 14 on September 29th.

The Register-Guard's story on the appointment is here.

Val will be an excellent representative for HD-14. She is a bright and articulate woman who will serve her constituents very effectively. It's great to see another woman added to the House roster- particularly one like Val who's been involved in the Emerge Oregon program. We are delighted to see this result and are very proud of Val. Way to go!

This is an excellent, although not surprising, appointment. Val should be a verygood legislator and, with her experience working with Senator Prozanski last session is certainly ready to hit the ground running in next year's special session.

With the exception Bruce Hanna's district, which also spans Lane and Douglas Counties, this is the toughest one for a Democrat in Lane County. Until Chris Edwards won it in 2006, it has been Republican since Larry Campbell won it in 1978 (albeit with occasional redistricting).

Chris Edwards won in 2006, not just because that was a good year for Democrats, but because he is the kind of moderate, pro-business Democrat who does well with swing voters in districts like this. While Val is more liberal (or "progressive," to use the term de jure) than Chris, she has the same practical, no-nonsense, get-the-job-done approach that should appeal to many of those same voters.

This was a good pick for Democrats, but I think it was a good pick for the district and for Lane County as well.

Val is a wonderful choice. Having had an opportunity to work with her in the Emerge Oregon program this year, I know she has the background and qualities that will make her an incredible addition to the Legislature. Congrats, Val. You make us all proud.
