Mapes: Kitzhaber "poised" to file in "next few hours"

Kari Chisholm FacebookTwitterWebsite

From the Oregonian's Jeff Mapes:

Former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber appears poised to jump into the governor's race.

The former two-term Democratic governor made several calls to top elected officials in Oregon on Monday and word swept through the state's political community Tuesday that Kitzhaber planned to file paperwork launching his campaign within the next few hours.

However, Kitzhaber is well-known for carefully considering his political options up to even right before an announcement.

Discuss.

Tick tock, tick tock. So, where's the announcement?

My analysis is over at DKos and I must say I am surprised he's doing it.

We should all be clicking on the Allen Alley for Governor ad that popped up here, right? Makes money for BlueOregon, and costs Alley money?

Might this upstage Alley's arrival at in Salem, after his walk across the state?

    skywaker9 --

checked out your post at dailykos -- you need to get your facts straight before posting, I think.

Most folks know Clem will not run if Kitzhaber does. Clem has stated so publicly. Your analysis showed no awareness of that.

And Bradbury has a mild, slow progressing form of MS, not cystic fibrosis. Bradbury has had MS since the early 1980s and served in many offices, most recently SOS through 2008. He's around age 60, I think. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease, usually diagnosed by the age of 6 months. Average life expentancy is 36.8 years. That's not what Bradbury has, and you do readers a disservice by putting out confusing and inaccurate info.

On top of all that, until Kitzhaber absolutely says "I am running" do we really know anything? Maybe we should wait for the announcement before we start analyzing. Kitzhaber may just be forming a committee to raise some money to take a poll to think some more about running. He waited till January of 2006 last time before saying he wouldn't run.

I had a conversation over dinner yesterday evening with a former member of the Kitzhaber administration. This person had no private knowledge but we were both guessing Dr. Kitz would not run. So count me surprised also. If so, I wonder if DeFazio runs too?

My estimate of Kitz is that he is more policy driven than politics driven, and therefore speculated he might wait until the end of the year to decide, based on what comes out of Congress on Health Care. But maybe he's lining up his ducks in case he does run.

    Goffman,

    My reply:

    1. Fixed that error on Bradbury.
    2. I know Clem said that and I note that below.
    3. I know he may not run but I'd say it's very likely now. He's never come this close before.

Skywaker, "very close" is not the same as "He's In!" -- as your headline misleadingly says.

Well you never know even if he says he is... remember that supposed Senate race against Gordon Smith? The problem is he breaths up all of the good air while the other candidates wait-

We could do a lot worse and he had a fair record in many areas- for example if you are a fish you know your interests will be considered- He did have good judicial appointments. I am sure I'd take him over Alley Oop or Atkinson's Southern Cross but it would sure be nice to have someone that say cared about the poor other than when they needed to pay a doctor.

I wonder if there wouldn't be an opening for a second candidate?

I assume you have John's website done and ready for launch. So tell us, when does it go live?

  • (Show?)

    MP -- Hahaha... Sorry, no.

Could it really be possible a major candidate runs as a Democrat and Kari doesn't do the website?

Oh, wait, I think someone other than Kari did the Ben Westlund for the St. Treasurer campaign website, given all the talented young people who worked on that campaign. And I doubt that while he was doing the Ted for Gov. website Kari also did Sorenson and Hill sites in 2006.

Kari, this snark is not so much aimed at you as it is at MP.

I mean really--if you were doing the website, would you say so here just to make MP happy?

I know it's hard for the conspiracy theorists to believe, but there are candidates who don't hire my firm. Some of them even hire my competitors - even the ones in Oregon! And most shockingly of all, sometimes I even support those candidates!

Kari didn't deny doing the site, only that he wouldn't tell me when it was going live :-)

If John didn't pick you, he should have. You do good work.

Kari- Isn't your firm doing Clem's site? I seem to recall you disclosing that at some point...

I don't know why you people care, really. But you can see the "powered by mandate media" at the bottom of each site that my firm develops.
