Tony Marino. Ugh.

Carla Axtman

Yesterday's salacious tale of right-wing "family values" conservative GOP hypocrisy in California:

An Orange County lawmaker who inadvertently broadcast explicit remarks about his sexual conquests over an open microphone abruptly resigned from office Wednesday after legislative leaders stripped him of his committee posts and launched an ethics probe of his actions.

Assemblyman Michael Duvall (R-Yorba Linda), whose remarks were videotaped in July during a lull in a Sacramento hearing, stepped down less than 24 hours after the tape spread online Tuesday night.

In the video, the married family-values crusader from Yorba Linda talks in graphic detail about women he said he slept with -- at least one of whom appeared to be a lobbyist with business before the utilities committee on which Duvall sat as vice chairman.

Today's salacious tale of right-wing "family values" conservative GOP hypocrisy in Oregon:

Tony J. Marino, 48, who has worked in broadcasting, marketing and Web development, and is a former board member of the Tigard Chamber of Commerce, will be sentenced Sept. 25 in Pierce County, Wash. He was initially charged with raping his estranged daughter, but the superior court in Pierce County changed the charges to second-degree incest — a class C felony — in exchange for a guilty plea.

Marino is currently lodged in the Pierce County Jail.

Marino, who created and ran America Web Works from Tigard, pleaded guilty to sexual contact with his daughter while they were staying at the Emerald Queen Casino and Hotel in Fife, Wash. on Aug. 16, 2008. The daughter reported this incident to Tigard police on Feb. 17, 2009, telling them her father had nonconsensual sexual intercourse with her while she said she was intoxicated.

Marino's website, which I wrote about in June of 2008 went on an on about the importance of leading a good Christian life and he'd help you do it for the right price.

Two months later he was buying shots for his young adult daughter and having sex with her at a hotel in Washington State.

Why is it that when you scratch beneath the 'family values' veneer of a morally upright Super-Christian republican you too often find at least a hypocrite and sometimes even a criminal?

I sometimes get the feeling that when you listen to a republican make a statement, you can pretty much can count on the opposite being the truth.

As a conservative blogger, I will likely post something about this on one of the conservative blogs. My silence (and the silence of others) does not equal any sort of support for this scumbag. Ask Carla (who I called as soon as I read this story) I am horrified by this story.

Personally, I just don't know what to say besides the obvious: this is disgusting and Marino should go away for a long time. But aside from that, I just don't understand how someone -- anyone -- can think this is OK. I don't get it, I don't have an explanation for it, and it concerns me that there are people out there who may think this kind of disgusting behaviour is acceptable.

Ross... I want to know what the hell he was doing on a motorcycle ride to Seattle - and doing shots in a casino - in the middle of a hard-fought campaign. What kind of campaigns you guys running?

Big deal, all that guy in California did was bang a lobbyist with business before his committee. That ought to get him a reward from Wingnut Central. On the other hand, if he had done something truly awful, like announce he had been in a 20 year long monogamous gay relationship, the wingnuts would have his head on a pike.

  • (Show?)

Kari - It's a bit of a stretch to say that Marino was involved in "a hard fought campaign". The guy lost by a 2-1 margin, and it looks as though the house republican caucus basically quit funding him in early July.

Ugh. I regret trying to defend him from those attacks last year. Even though back then I thought he was a good candidate, there was something strange about him that I tried to ignore because it was just a feeling, nothing logical. Once I heard about his five marriages, his Ph.D thing and the online ordinations, I thought that was weird so I talked to him on the phone about it and was kinda reassured, but it was never the same. I am soooo glad I never ended up campaigning for him. I just regret ever defending him. Carla, Kari, and everyone else who lambasted him were correct. What a creeper ugh disgusting :-O :(

AJ526 - Wow. Real profile in courage on your part.

First, you shill for Marino on this website and attack his opponent personally.

Now you're claiming to have some incredible sixth sense making you the "candidate whisperer" who can sniff out the bad guys "who you didn't campaign for."

What's your definition of campaigning AJ526? Shilling on Blue Oregon and writing about Marino's "courage" and defending his phony Ph.D.

AJ526 - you're a real piece of work. If you had any real courage you'd tell Blue Oregon readers your real name, apologize for shilling for Marino, and stop pretending that you "didn't campaign for Marino."

But you won't do that because you're a weasel AJ526.

    Marjorie,

Thank you for your kind words. (just kidding)

I never knocked on doors or called people on behalf of Mr. Marino. I did attempt to defend him because I felt like he was being attacked personally after he put out the letter detailing some of his faults. All I said about Galizio is that he should talk about his own problems. I was not campaigning for Marino (how any votes do you think I could win for him of Blueoregon? :). I had met him and his family a few times, which is why I defended him from PERSONAL attacks. I certainly do not consider that campaigning. I'm not trying to say I have some incredible sixth sense or something, I think sometimes you can just get the feeling from someone that they're strange, or nice, or other characteristics. Though I initially thought he was a nice guy, I was a little uneasy about him.

I'm sorry for defending Marino on this sight. I was in the wrong and I wish I never wrote anything about him. I'd apologize on the House floor, but much to your chagrin, I'm not a member of the House so I can't. In fact, I'm nobody that you've ever heard of, which is why there is no reason to reveal my real name to an immature name caller such as yourself. You'll have to live with AJ526 (or weasel, or dummy, or whatver else you can think of ;)for now.

I realize a lot of us rag on GOPers for being, well, GOPers, but when a major party ends up running a sketchy guy like this, what does it say about the party. The Democrats have had their share of scumbags as well, but at least the party has adopted (an almost) zero tolerance policy (McGreevey, Spitzer). When you set the bar as low as the GOP has had to do because of their policies, this is what you end up with. I'd like to think if a Dem had issues like this and won in a primary, the party wouldn't endorse him and support an independent or the GOP candidate. We need to value something more than ideology? Don't we?

  • (Show?)

Thankfully Marino won't be able to use name recognition to get elected now that Galizio has traded up. The district deserves competent, honest representation.

I read somewhere that the incidence of sociopathic personality types among politicians is about 20%, consistent among all parties. That sounds about right. I'm glad to see no one is defending this guy. There is nothing at all wrong with promoting stable families as a matter of public policy, but the term "family values" has become a code word for a whole set of beliefs that have little to do with that goal. For those who are still attracted to that set of beliefs, I sincerely hope these all-to-common, almost predictable incidents of hypocrisy help them recognize charlatans and understand how grossly they are being manipulated. Personally, I've gotten to the point I assume anyone hawking "family values" as a campaign strategy must have repulsive personal secrets until proven otherwise. As the Bard wrote, "methinks the lady doth protest too much."

To my friends on the right, please help us purge these people from public service. It's for everyone's good. And, yes, I know the left has its own brands of psychos who get re-elected or given a pass based on identity politics and code speech. All beside the point--the moral majority TM should be abandoned, it's a tainted brand.

Why IS it that so many Republicans -- especially fundamentalist Republicans -- seem to have so much trouble controlling their sexual impulses? Is it because of the sexual repression that their bizarre religion imposes on them?

For every Democrat who gets embroiled in a scandal like this (Elliot Spitzer, Bill Clinton) there seem to be at least 10 Republicans.

"I read somewhere that the incidence of sociopathic personality types among politicians is about 20%, consistent among all parties."

That may be true, although I'm always suspicious of statements that begin with "I read somewhere that ... " However, sociopathy can express itself in many ways -- in lying, in stealing, in violent behavior, in sexual misconduct. Republican politicians seem to prefer the latter.

I posted this on the other posting about Tony:

I know this family and what Tony did is appalling but I am writing because I am upset about the fact that there are two other children involved in this now. They are young and had moved on with their lives. It took months for them to come to grips with everything and now you have thrown this back in their faces. With everything being posted on the internet and his Facebook page, the kids had to relive this. But, now, they are dealing with all of their friends knowing too. By putting all of this out there, these kids have been victimized again and it is just not right. I wish people would think before they speak (post).

  • (Show?)

Hey, I'm gonna defend Joe White! Wow, what a day -- anyway, that's one of my faves too, speaking as a budding epidemiologist, and it's just a joke. I heard it first from Matt Burtch (now Mateo) ca. 1979 at Reed.

Dartagnan, IMO the causality may run in the other direction -- struggles with sexual self-control in various senses may lead people to religious extremism & the creation of repressive values. If you get a chance, read Athanaius' hagiography The Life of St. Antony sometime, relates to the origins of Christian monasticism.

I pretty strongly disagree that this says anything in particular about Rs vs. Ds, or that Ds have any better track record. Also I note that a couple of conservatives have commented on this site specifically in criticism and what seems to be honest dismay about Marino, that I don't find AJ526 particularly self-serving, and that we'd do better to question our propensity for generalizations than to decide not to acknowledge the basic fact. If we don't we're no better than all the stupid "you libs" trolls.

I also know Tony. I know the truth about this situation. Where he may not be a perfect man, who is, he did not commit this crime. The judicial system is seriously flawed. Has anyone thought that maybe this young woman (not child) is lying? She has had broken relationships with other members of her family and a history of drug problems. No one made her drink. She is an adult who chose how to handle herself. She has also told lies about me. One more important fact............Mr. Marino was not even in Washington on the day in question. In a case of he said/ she said, you take a big chance with a jury. Look at all the remarks from people who know nothing about the situation. Go to church and find out what faith really means.

Hey Jill: so, broken relationships mean you are the one wrong? Can't wait to report this fact to those who counseled me caringly to gently walk away from my cannabalistic family system that just could not seem to recover together. An adult child of Tony Marino came to Oregon from Hawaii to bond with her father, and although she may have issues, she is not the accused! Tony would not admit to anything he did not do! Why would he take the fall for her? He just met her! He plead to a lesser charge so he could get out of jail!! Let’s not forget Tony has told us all of the many crooked roads he has traveled . He stated some of them in black and white while he was running for office. I believe, as sick as it is he had no parental emotion for his daughter, only sexual. Therefore he thought it was ok to do what he did to her. He will always deny that he harmed her, because he needs to save face... what he has left of one. What he may not realize is that from this point forward he will never go anywhere, or do anything without people looking at him as a sexual deviant, which I believe he is. But I don’t think he thought of all of that before committed this horrific act, because Tony acts impulsively. He never thought of his other children- What he has done has ruined so many lives, including his own. His wife wouldn’t have left him if he wasn't guilty! So he may get out of jail on Sept 25th, but he will always be imprisoned! And before you ask the question I know Tony personally, for many years!
