SD-22: Chip Shields to seek Senate seat
Kari Chisholm
The first candidate for the seat held by departing Senator Margaret Carter (D-Portland) is in. State Rep. Chip Shields is in, says Willamette Week.
From the release from Rep. Shields:
"For over 25 years, Senator Carter has been fighting and delivering for the people of N/NE Portland. Whether it was delivering skill training or funding for mental health and drug treatment, Margaret has a lifetime of accomplishing real results for the people of this district and indeed for all of Oregon, " said Rep. Shields. "She will be sorely missed in the legislature, but I am excited for what she will do for the state in her new position as Deputy Director of the Oregon Department of Human Services." ..."Beyond my ties to the whole senate district, the main reason to pursue the post is that the issues I've been delivering on in three terms in the Oregon House-- living-wage jobs, health care, schools and equality -- are exactly the issues that are also critically important to all of Senate District 22," said Shields. "It would be honor to continue working on those concerns for all of District 22 in the Oregon Senate."

While I don't know who else is interested, Chip would be fantastic. He's my Representative and I've always been impressed by his work ethic, his values, and his incredibly engaged and thoughtful demeanor.

An "endorsement" from Evan Manvel could well be a kiss of death for Chip Shields. :)

;) Of course, I only speak for myself in the above.

Chip's also my rep and would be a great senator. I know there are a lot of talented folks in the district, but I'd love to see Chip be appointed.

In my encounters with him at the capitol, I found Rep. Shields to be an honorable and personable individual. I think one of my old friends interned for him during the 2007 session. True class act. More power to him. Good luck, Chip!

Has Chip picked out the state job that he gets at the end yet?

Great Rep. Should advance to the Senate with ease.

Although a nice guy and secure for his district, Chip is a weak chink in the Democratic armor as he is the symbol for the one area that the Republicans can make traction with the general electorate: crime.
