Rep. Larry Galizio resigns to join Oregon University System

The Oregonian reports that Rep. Larry Galizio (D-Tigard) will resign at the end of the month to take a post with the Oregon University System as the director of strategic planning.
Higher education Chancellor George Pernsteiner confirmed that Galizio will take a job as an "academic planner" working to coordinate university programs with community colleges. ...He said his job would be to work for "a better alignment between community colleges and the university system. We're tying to get more under-served Oregonians into post-secondary education."
As usual, Democratic precinct committee people will select 3-5 candidates - and the Washington County Commission will select the new state representative.
According to the O, Galizio has a successor in mind:
Galizio said he hopes they pick Margaret Doherty, an education activist.
Galizio will be missed in the legislature. He was a strong progressive voice from a swing district. Good luck, Larry.

Larry will be sorely missed. He is sharp, thoughtful, and willing to take an unpopular stand. He has been a needed voice for higher education. Mostly I'll miss his sense of humor -- he is one of the wittiest people in the Capitol. Good luck Larry!

Hey Kari - did you pull Chuck's column out of BO? The one on the loss of the state prog to support impoverished two-parent households? There were interesting stats being cited. I see it nowhere. And your post on HC Reform town halls? Truncated. About half of it missing viz comments.
The curious want to know about that Bermuda Triangle effect!

Kari: Small correction -- PCPs from both Washington and Multnomah County will meet to vote on a slate of possible replacements. Then the County Commissions from both counties will hold a joint meeting, probably via telephone, to make the final selection. Yes, there is a very small sliver of Multnomah County in District 35. Talk to Wayne Kinney if you want to get into the weeds of the Rules.

Congratulations, Larry! Thank you for a job well done and the best to you in your new endeavors. So often, constituents are ready to criticize their electeds, but never utter a peep of approval or thanks. So few really realize what a difficult, under-compensated job it is to be a State lawmaker.
You'll be great in your new position, and I'm thinking you'll hear a lot less grumbling. Thanks for your service to the metro area AND to Oregon!

Larry did a really good job. I'm glad I recommended him to the party to originally run for this position. Now that he's leaving, I'm submitting my name to replace him. I contacted the Washington County party chair and will probably stop by their office today or tomorrow.

The Multnomah portion of HD 35 is the bluest part of the district -- and consistently provides the edge needed to keep the seat in Democratic hands. It's the area around PCC's Sylvania campus where Larry has been on the faculty.

The Oregonian is connecting the wrong dots. 1. As a longtime instructor at PCC and OEA member it is not surprising that Larry would meet with Chip Terhune, former OEA lobbyist now working for the Governor. 2. Larry has been working on the Ways and Means Committee these past several sessions and has focused on the education budget.
3. Larry has just finished work on a PhD in Public Administration at PSU. Obviously he has been preparing for an administrative career for a number of years now. This makes Larry's move to the University system as a strategic planner a natural progression rather a surprise. 4. Larry signaled his changed vote on the Metolius prior to the phone call from the Governor: he heard from constituents and listened thoughtfully to their concerns. He indicated that he was considering changing his position after he heard from concerned Oregonians other than the Governor.
Therefore, the Oregonian's circumstantial case arguing for a quid quo pro is just plain bogus and a smear against a decent hardworking public servant.
