Democratic Women Emerge in of all places.....Jackson County!

Paulie Brading

In Mid-July I peddled the first ever Emerge Oregon event in Southern Oregon inviting Democratic women to learn how to strengthen the fabric of our communities and what it takes to be part of a solution. Our committee lead by Lynn Howe, who recently ran for State Representative and board member of Emerge Oregon put together an all day workshop for women who are potential campaign workers, issue leaders, advocates and future candidates for Southern Oregon.

Well throw away your stereotypes of Southern Oregon because 40 women are signed up to attend the August 8th event from 8:30 am- 4:00 pm at the RCC/SOU Higher Education Center in Medford. A networking reception from 5 to 7PM at the Red Rock Italian Eatery completes the day. Candidate for governor Bill Bradbury, Senate candidate Steve Novick, State Reps and more are attending the reception.

Barack Obama won in Jackson County. Senator Merkley nearly reached 50% in votes and Attorney General John Kroger won with a landslide. Someday, I hope to report the names of Democratic women in everyone of those offices and more. We're off to a good start by making an investment in future women leaders throughout the state.

Emerge America was founded just 6 years ago to address the growing concern that women's unique experiences and shared concerns are under-represented in the policy making process. Emerge Oregon was founded just this year and Southern Oregon women are about to begin to take their place at the table. There are just a few slots left for the workshop at a total cost of $25. Call Lynn Howe at 541-778-9600 to grab one of the last slots available. Look for a report on this event after August 8th.

MORE SOUTHERN OREGON NEWS:

Jeff Merkley's Deputy State Director Mary Beth Healy was in Medford yesterday listening to citizens regarding their heath care concerns. State Senator Alan Bates joined her at one of the large events held.

The recall election of 6 out of 8 city council members in the city of Grants Pass has everyone clued to the television and reading the The Grants Pass Daily Courier. People line up at the Courier offices to pick up the daily papers hot off the press.

Former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury and candidate for governor is making a swing through Southern Oregon next weekend.

FYI- It's only five of the Grants Pass councilors being recalled. Petitioners decided against recalling one councilor after he changed his position regarding the termination of the city manager. A separate effort has been launched to recall the mayor, but I don't think that's gotten much traction yet.

So noted, and thanx for the correction.

Scott, good to read you here on occasion. What are the odds that the re-call will go through as planned?

Kurt- It's hard to say. I think some of the councilors are definitely on their way out, and a couple might survive. The only thing that's for certain is that the community of Grants Pass will remain divided about this until it's all settled. But not me. I'll continue to watch the whole thing from the tranquility of the beautiful Illinois Valley, and be grateful that my city council actually gets along and behaves like adults.

Speaking of recalls, my father used to be on the city council in Medford where the wingnuts led an effort to recall him and all the councilors who voted in favor of a gay rights resolution. They paraded downtown with a banner in bold print "RECALL the City Council Sodomites!" Dontcha love Southern Oregon politics.
