(Updated) Metolius protections: One down, one to go

This just in: The Metolius protections passed the Oregon Senate this morning on a 16-12 vote. Democrats Walker and Metsger voted no. Nelson was excused and Atkinson was absent.

Good for Walker and Metsger for realizing that this is a blatant political power grab against the normal process. Shame on Bates for carrying it for the Senate, I had hoped he respected land use planning law better. Hopefully there are enough politicians in the house with backbones who will stand up to this manipulation of the process.

Carla, of course, is wrong again, although she will denounce this as non-journalism, unlike her own:
*Meanwhile, rank-and-file House members are being lobbied by their counterparts in the Senate. Rep. Bill Garrard, R-Klamath Falls, said Johnson has approached him twice urging him to vote for the bill.
"The only person who lobbied me is Betsy," Garrard said. "I hold her in the highest regard, and I have great sympathy for her feelings about the Metolius. But this bill is a violation of our land-use process."

If Vicki Walker is looking to establish a statewide progressive base to run for Governor again she made a big mistake by voting against the ban on so-called destination resorts in the Metolius basin. This was the key environmental vote of the session for Central Oregonians.
Don't let the Jefferson County Commissioners foaming at the mouth fool anyone. The people in Central Oregon have had it with this type of exclusive and harmful form of development. Just look at the vote in Crook County last fall. The Jefferson County Commission never met a subdivision it didn't like or a resource it wouldn't jeopordize for a dime.
Maybe Walker was trying to exploit a perceived vulnerability in potential rival State Treasurer Ben Westlund who supports saving the Metolius Basin but she should find a way to politic without destroying Oregon's jewels.

And maybe, just maybe she thought it was more important to reach out to NAV and moderate Oregonians who understand and appreciate the land use process and value private property rights.

Stop drinking the kool aide. Please don't roll Rep. Komp in a wheelchair to vote "NO". Clem should just take down Johnson's fence.
