Brrr!

Jeff Alworth

Even as I post this, the most dramatic period of snow and wind seems to be waning. Still, a wonderfully wintry tableau. Stay warm!

Snow

Update, from Kari: A quick weather note for those planning to attend the Darlene Hooley tribute event tonight in downtown Portland -- the event has NOT been canceled. Please consider public transportation and stay safe.

Brrr is right. Temperature has been dropping all morning and it's supposed to get down to 25F by 5 pm. And the snow is still falling here in SE Portland, along with a chilly wind.

Brings to mind an important event yesterday, regarding the homeless. Might have to sleep on the balcony tonight in at least spiritual solidarity...

Friends in Texas have already called to ask if we have anymore of "those sliding videos" yet.

Oh, I should mention: those shots are from the front and rear windows of my house in SE Portland. 9:57 am and it's really letting up. The sky has lightened, suggestive that the clouds are moving through. Snow is still falling, but tiny flecks, like salt.

Oh, I had forgotten this video...I will have to go watch on YouTube now!

Gee -- I haven't seen so many white flakes since watching the GOP convention this summer.

Our enduring shame, the sliding-car vid. BTW, it seems to have picked up again. Gusts and larger flakes now swirling outside my window.

Awwww! Is it cold outside? Too bad. What a bunch of whimps. I remember a few years back when the DPO had a reorganization meeting and a big ice storm hit Portland. Everyone from all over Oregon made the metting except the folks from Portland. LOL. You folks really need to toughen up! I'm sorry I just like to stir things up - it's my nature.

  • (Show?)

Um, anyone complaining, Phil? Methinks you project, brother. I love it.

Anyone know of any local global warming conventions?

Phil, the feminized progressive males of Portland "toughen up"? HAHA - LOL.

Ned Now let's not stir-up the trolls with global warming talk.

Phil, the feminized progressive males of Portland "toughen up"? HAHA - LOL.

Most feminization in mammals is a result of environmental contaminants, pseudo-estrogens. Next time you wonder why progressives won't debate the environment, consider it might be because you simultaneously whine about the effects while supporting the practice that caused it (dumping carbon/dumping aromatics)!

And it's climate change, not global warming. Only the simplistic naive would think that you can turn the temp up in a terrarium and you get a simple, linear increase in temp. Increase in atmospheric moisture, new circulation patterns, loss of ocean currents, all mean that "global warming" could leave areas like Northern Europe very much colder.

I know you weren't making points- too much- but it is irritating how one does hear people talk about warming in terms like "oh, Britain will have new mediterranean species replacing those that are no longer there", as if everything just moves north a few miles. Thin skinned types such as myself would be less reactive if you mention, "of course I'm not advocating for complacency", because that's usually how it gets taken. Maybe an overreaction, but there are plenty of influential people that are doing it.

And if you really, really have to support the conservatives on this, consider that dis-information on climate change could land energy companies in the same spot that tobacco ended up. In a damage tort, a big, big part of making the case is the systematic misleading the public bit. If big energy just said, "wow, who knows what to do; maybe take a slowish approach", there would be no basis for lawsuits. Instead, all these apologists are fashioning the legal noose for their masters. I mention this because a scholarly paper recently appeared in the UK saying that the computer models were nearly good enough for victims of flood, etc., to litigate for damages against energy companies. That's a stretch, but the point is, apology ain't helping them and it ain't helping us, either!

12:48PM, the snow is really coming down here in Beaverton, very pretty, breezy and brisk-brisk-brisk!

Don't you know it's not "global warming" anymore, but "global climate change." BTW, it's 42 and sunny here in Salem.

Same for Gresham, though it does get bright for minutes at a time. Makes a nifty avatar , too.

Looks like another squall headed up from Corvallis/Salem.

  • (Show?)

I have one temp thing that says 23, another that says 19. So I'm not sure which it is...

According to the local news, it feels like 2 degrees at Sam Barlow High. We've had more than 2" here in NE Gresham, and it's still falling.

We played outside for a while, but it was way too cold outside.

School has been canceled for Portland and Beaverton on Monday.

(And a great chorus of joy lifts up from the spawn....)

Yea, Gresham-Barlow sent out an email about an hour or so ago saying that school was closed tomorrow. I'm glad they made the declaration early. A year or so ago, they made the call so late that kids arrived at school to find no staff there.
