The one day that I'm not on campus. It figures.

I can't be there so I just want to say congratulations to Senator Jeff Merkley.

I certainly hope that he conducts himself, and his constituents with more integrity and respect than he showed in the campaign.

Oh Pam, go away. Jeff Merkley is a man of solid integrity and great respect, and he conducted his campaign that way. He never attacked Gordon Smith on personal things, always made it about policy.

No, I think Pam is right. Gordo needed to go, and Jeff is lucky that he could ride in on the big blue wave. His campaign staff showed little integrity during the campaign, only sightly more than Smith's. I join many others who congratulate him, but hope that he rises up some for his next big task. First thing Jeff........fire that campaign staff and surround yourself with others who are more positive. You will be a great pick once you start to really think for yourself.

Regardless of how Merkley's campaign was run, he will be one of Oregon's senators in January and, as Ralph Nader has suggested, as far as the people are concerned Congress is more important than the White House. The people can have a more direct contact and influence with their senators and representatives. (That doesn't apply to progressives in Greg Walden's Congressional district.) If the people who voted for Obama want him to keep the promises he made or implied (or they thought he made) then they need to lean on the people they send to Congress. More ...
To repeat a point I have made before, Senator Wyden appeared to be leaning towards supporting the war on Iraq when he visited Central Oregon in 2002. He got an earful there and, presumably, other parts of Oregon and decided on not supporting the war. The people spoke and he listened. The same needs to apply to Merkley.

I'm happy for Senator Merkley, but seeing Gordon Smith finally go away is like winning the lottery for me.
Get your drink on, whatever it is. The nightmare is over.
Next up, Mel Martinez!

Not only did this election get rid of Gordon Smith it also got rid of Christopher Shays in Connecticut. Perhaps, the people in his district were seeking some form of redemption for sending Joe Lieberman back to the senate. Shays, however, should do well for himself by making a transition to some job in the corporate world he has helped support.

Seems mighty quixotic to denigrate the campaign staff of a campaign which just did what no Oregon Dem has done in 40 years - unseat an incumbent GOP Senator.
Merkley won and that simply wouldn't have happened if it weren't for his campaign staff. In particular the campaign management (Jon and Courtney) deserve huge credit as do his two netroots coordinators (Carla and Sarah). Many, many others do too. But those were crucial positions which flat outperformed their competition.

Let's not forget Brownlow's 85,000+ votes, most of which would probably have gone to Smith in a straight-up election.
That being said, I'm a very big Merkley supporter and I know if he even brings a tenth of the common sense and ability to move progressive legislation as he did in the Oregon House, he will prove to be an outstanding servant of ALL of the people of Oregon.

Merkley is Great! He'll make a fine Senator, and will work with senator Wyden as a fellow Democrat more than Smith ever could have.
I'd be missing Merkley's coalition-building skills in the state legislature, except that we got some reinforcements there too. Good thing.

People like to assume that if Brownlow hadn't been there, that Smith would have gotten those votes.

It is much more likely that those people would have undervoted the race or just written someone in rather than voting for Smith.
