Scared to canvass? Do it in costume!

Kari Chisholm FacebookTwitterWebsite

OK, OK, OK... I know. Knocking on the doors of strangers and talking to them is hard. It might even be cringe-inducingly scary.

But, since you were a little kid, you've been able to do it on October 31. Maybe it was the lure of the candy. Maybe it was the reassurance provided by a rubber mask, or makeup, or a funny hat.

But the best way to get people out to vote is to knock on their door and ask them to vote. And besides, while you may be too old to ask strangers for candy anymore, if you ask them to vote, they'll probably give you some anyway.

So, put on a costume, and go join the Bus Project today in a nonpartisan GOTV canvass today. You'll be joined by lots of canvassing rookies -- in 2004 and 2006, roughly a third of participants said Trick or Vote was the first political thing they'd ever tried.

You should give major props on this to Alex Aronson at the Bus, who has turned this into a national event, with I think 50 different groups going out across the country. Rack up another Oregon-born innovation!

Wish they had a start time later than 5:30 p.m., which is well before I get off work. They told me I could be on the party setup crew.

Great turnout at the 3:30. Garrett took the time to explain his costume to my kids and we had a great conversation about campaign finance reform in the car on the way out to our turf.folks at the door were friendly and receptive.Maddie, Jana, Mackenna, Spencer and Jack thought it was worth cutting into their evening. They just wish they were old enough to vote! Kudos to all the BP folks.
