Ballot Measure Recap
Jeff Alworth
About 75% of you still haven't voted, so here's a handy recap of my ballot measure reviews.
- Measure 54. Shores up the constitutional provisions about voting ages.
- Measure 55. Allows legislators to serve out terms in their own district following redistricting.
- Measure 56. Repeals double-majority.
- Measure 57. State legislature's sensible crime law.
- Measure 58. Sizemore's English-language bill for public schools.
- Measure 59. Sizemore's federal-tax deduction scheme.
- Measure 60. Sizemore's merit-pay for teachers scheme.
- Measure 61. Kevin Mannix's insensible crime law.
- Measure 62. Mannix's plan to restrict lottery funds for crime-prevention.
- Measure 63. Sizemore's scheme to exempt homeowners from building permits.
- Measure 64. Sizemore's scheme to cripple unions' political dues-raising (and strengthen himself).
- Measure 65. Phil Keisling's "top-two" voting proposal.
Most independent news sources and liberal advocacy groups recommend voting yes on 54-57 and no on 58-64--as did I. Measure 65 has advocates on both sides, so have fun with that one. Good luck and good voting--

Is there a way to poll us here at BO to see how we are doing on them? I am curious as to see what is going dowm after all the posts on them - especially 57, 61, and 65. maybe we can see if BO is living up to the recommondations.

I like the "first four and then no more" saying that I've been hearing. That's how I voted.

Jeff:
Measure 56 is really a "reform" of the Double Majority election requirement, rather than a "repeal".

Where are stories about ballot measure polls?
Usually someone has released a poll by now on some of the ballot measures.

Sizemore and Mannix waste so much of our time and resources. Is it too late to bring back the Ostracon?
What a couple of loons.

I've removed the errant link. Thanks, Dan.

Thanks for the roundup Jeff. I checked out the newspaper endorsements, which from what I could find are almost unanimously in line with the sentiment around here. I made a post over at LoadedOrygun" with a handy chart of newspaper ballot measure endorsements from around the state.

Yes on all, except for 56 and 57. Seems to be the other popular configuration. At least in our extended household.

I voted for 65; it seems a good step forward in destasbilizing the strangle hold that the 2 major parties have on the process.

Sorry Jenni...
First three get a YES, everything else a NO. 57 and 61 will logically be voted down and 65 is too ripe for a court challenge for any YES vote. You would be wasting your vote and time by voting yes on 65.
Everything else is simple: Sizemore/Mannix = NO NO NO

Eric
If only our electorate saw things your way! Unfortunately 61 and 57 are BOTH going to get far more than 50% of the vote. We need to use our yes votes on 57 to protect our state from the extraordinary damage that 61 would cause.

Sizemore admitted Measure 64 would ban passing the hat at political events held on public property such as a PTA meeting.
Nobody got into what is the hidden agenda here, the destruction of the public sector - which has worked so well for them when it came to public oversight of Wall Street. Wonder how long it will be 'til we hire our own police force, food tasters, etc. - or do without if we're not rich enough.
