Republicans upset with Gordon Smith's pandering

The Bend Bulletin reports (subscription only) that Central Oregon Republicans are upset with Gordon Smith:

Central Oregon Republicans aren’t happy with Sen. Gordon Smith’s reluctance to embrace his party in recent months, but some said recently they still plan to vote for their only statewide officeholder. ...

Last week, Smith declined to serve in the largely symbolic position of honorary co-chairman for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, despite the fact Smith has been a longtime supporter of McCain’s presidential bid.

Earlier this summer, Smith announced he would not attend the Republican National Convention, and — most upsetting to local Republicans — Smith has run television ads touting his work with current Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama and former nominee John Kerry.

“They really don’t like seeing the ads advocating that he’s working with John Kerry or with Obama,” said Jackie Ehlers, vice chairwoman of the Deschutes County Republicans. ...

Scott Waters, a Bend resident active in the local Republican Party, said he’d like both Smith and McCain to focus more on conservative issues, especially reducing illegal immigration. But he still thinks he will vote for them.

“I probably will, but somehow they need to get the message that we conservatives aren’t just going to vote for them because they’re a Republican,” Waters said.

Nancy Lecklider, a board member of the Deschutes County Republicans, agreed.

“Smith is the only Republican senator on the West Coast, so we need to be sure to keep him,” Lecklider said. “As you can imagine (after) some of the things that he said, there are a lot of Republicans who ... are going to hold their nose and vote for him.”

It will be really interesting for those of us interested in political science to see how many Republicans vote this November in Oregon. They are not enthusiastic about either McCain or Smith. Their candidate in the 5th Congressional district is a congenital liar who likes to flout the law and supports Abortion on his demand. There are no ballot measures dealing with abortion or gay rights/marriage. What's a good right-winger supposed to do? Why bother?

Neither Obama or McCain are committed to stopping the illegal immigration invasion. Neither party can be trusted with halting illegal aliens over running this nation. Most Americans are correct in her thinking, because illegal immigration is not just hurting a few states, but every state in the union. These politicians, advocates, pundits, better realize that illegal immigration is not going to be an issue they can brush under the rug. It's no longer Democrat versus Republican, or in this case Democrats are adverse to the original planned border fence and anything that has a sweet smell of rigid immigration enforcement. But I'm not even saying that the Democrats are the worst advocates of enforcing a laws, because many of the Republicans are pre-owned by the International Globalists. Along with the Iraq War illegal immigration is costing American taxpayers at all different levels of government at least a trillion dollars each year. Corrupt Incumbents need to thrown out of office? All & every politician that doesn't sponsor the Federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) Any elected official (Hired-help) which includes Governors, Mayors, councilman, city managers who pander to the Special Interest lobby. They should be tarred and feathered if they are in collusion with foreign governments like Mexico.

If Americans don't fight back against the Globalist tyranny that will swamp us with cheap labor. The Democrats who have gutted the border fence funding, so we will be dealing with Overpopulation in just 20 years. The drugs, the escalating crime rate and the wilting nationwide economy. It's entirely up to 'THE PEOPLE' in the coming months. Both parties are going to land America with another AMNESTY.

Taxpayers will be paying for both the illegal immigration insurgency and the welfare and profits for the predatory employers. If your really want to know the unrestricted ugly truth not found in the liberal-socialist press. If you want to do something about job loses, your mortgage, your families future. Go to NUMBERSUSA .

Ask your State representative energy conservation? How much gas, oil and electricity we could save, if we sent illegal aliens home. We cannot keep up the demand for it right now! Oil! Diversity Alliance for Sustainable America.(earthtimes) stated in it's article that if the U.S. grants amnesty and gives citizenship to 12 to 30 million illegal migrants already here, as McCain, Obama and the majority of Democrats propose. That all those naturalized citizens could possibly add 120 million U.S. and foreign-born relatives to the U.S., in the next 20 years whom all will CONSUME MAJOR ENERGY. Does the American people need to escalate the 315 million plus population, the census estimates we have now? To a new total of 435 million?

Massive negative consequences of illegal immigration on today's and yesterdays economy. Illegal Immigration is all enveloping our economy! Everything! Obama, McCain, Governors, Mayors, Councilors, City managers take notice! 80 percent of the American people are watching! How many more nefarious companies out their, violating safety and immigration laws. When ICE knocks on the door eventually--and they will, under the Federal SAVE ACT. Deportation is an absolute certainty. Whereas, voluntary 'ATTRITION' means you can re-apply like all the millions of legal immigrants.

Overpopulation, traffic congestion, urban sprawl, pollution, environmental damage, water, oil, gas, energy diminishing resources, contagious diseases, lack of affordable housing, depressed wages of US citizens, underground economic, fraudulent documents, identity theft, Sanctuary cities, predatory businesses tax evasion, soaring nationwide crime rate growth , increased taxpayer burdens, $$$ going across the border, overseas, overcrowded schools, uneducated legal children, overcrowded prisons, inadequate health care for legal residents, but free health care for illegal immigrants.

The balkanization of our communities and a large and growing population with loyalty to other Nations. Just read this disturbing revelation of costs to the Taxpayer: GOOGLE these sites! Find the truth? numbersusa, snopes-under-politics, fairus, capsweb, americanpatrol, libertypost, vdare. Our politicians must endorse the Federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) before the next AMNESTY bill.

John, fear not. In Oregon, conservatives can find their motivation in the five Bill Sizemore-sponsored initiatives this fall, plus the delightful Measure 62, which requires 15% of lottery proceeds go to the Public Safety Fund, protected from those spendthrift schools and child programs.

To top things off, opposition to Measure 56 (lowering the bar for approval of future property tax measures) ought to motivate voter participation on the right.

I don't think Barack Obama is the man he claims he is with regard to "changing" politics, but he's gotta be better than what we have.

Look at this statement and there is no wonder why this nation is in such dire straits:

“They really don’t like seeing the ads advocating that he’s working with John Kerry or with Obama,”

For all the desire for bipartisanship and unity and governing for a greater good (that of the entire nation), when it comes down to it, the political mindset of many people is simply, "us versus them".

  • (Show?)

    Ian,

The question is whether the initiatives you mention resonate enough to motivate voters that are so disappointed in the major candidates and their lack of inspirational ballot measures. While I agree with you that they will tend to vote for Sizemore's crap if they vote, I am convinced that a small % will not get that far. The question is how big a %.

And I forgot to mention that the Republican candidate for Congress in the 1st CD publically supports Obama and doesn't want a "victory" in Iraq, the Republican candidate for Attorney General is a Democrat, the Republican candidate for Treasurer worked for a Democratic Governor, and nobody knows their candidate for Secretary of State. Just curious.

Is it still "pandering" if it's true? Smith certainly can't count on the mainstream media to cover his bipartisanship honestly -- they still try to depict Obama as a centrist who will work across party lines, which he's never done -- the same media who refuse to report on Smith's long track record of bipartisanship and cooperation.

Anonymous, that must come as a surprise to Sen. Richard Lugar, the Republican Senator from Indiana and leading Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Comm. Or maybe Republicans don't want that to be known and think "bipartisan" only means co-sponsoring legislation with the likes of McCain or Gordon Smith.

John: Another question occurs to me: is Republican turnout more reliable in an unusually difficult year (for them), like 2008 (maybe 1964 and 1974 also), compared to Democratic turnout in really bad years for the Democrats? This is a slightly different question than the usual "who turns out" kind. The convention wisdom says Republicans are hardier, and supposedly, helped when overall turnout is bad. Some research disputes this. I guess we'll see; I think the tax measures will mobilize them. Gronke could probably tell you in his sleep.

But you provoked another thought: aren't the de facto Democrat vs. Democrat races a precursor of the effects of Measure 65 (the open primary measure). If it is, one party races may be a troubling consequence (at least, it troubles me).

1 reason to Vote for Gordon Smith = Balance.

Do you Democrats really want an end to checks & balances?

Do you really want a D House, a D Senate and a D Pres.? Isn't that Facism? no? Too much power for one group for me.

Brittanicus, great post on the impact of Illegal immigration.

Spare us... Would you GOP trolls please consult a dictionary before using big words like facism?

Despite its use by your leader, the brilliant George W Bush, it does not mean "anything bad."

From wikipedia: "Fascism is an authoritarian nationalist political ideology and mass movement that is concerned with notions of cultural decline or decadence, and which seeks to achieve a millenarian national rebirth by exalting the nation or race, as well as promoting cults of unity, strength and purity"

Having two out of three (or all) branches of government dominated by one party has nothing to do with whether a country or a party is governing with a Facist ideology.

Rick, did you protest the years in the early part of this century when there was an R President, R Senate and R House? Did you celebrate when the Senate became 50-50 and then Jeffords left the GOP and made the Senate 51-49?

Because unless you did, you are saying it is perfectly acceptable for Republicans to do something you would criticize Democrats for doing by saying, "Do you really want a D House, a D Senate and a D Pres.? Isn't that Facism? no? Too much power for one group for me."

I think there was too much power when Bush and the Republicans controlled both ends of Pennsylvania Ave. and had the Supreme Court to back them up.

There are people who think the Patriot Act, the warrantless wiretaps, the torture memo, the Gitmo actions the Supreme Court ruled against very well might qualify for this definition of fascism:

a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

I can't see Obama, his VP, and the 50+ very individual Democratic US Senators " forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism" the way Bush, Cheney, Congressional leadership did.

the same media who refuse to report on Smith's long track record of bipartisanship and cooperation.

    BWAH HAHAHAHAHA!!!

For starters, that's all the media does - yammer endlessly about how Gordon Smith is a "leading GOP moderate" (despite his clear voting record to the contrary)

Not only that, but he admits that he's a conservative, not a moderate and declared that he's "done everything conservatives want."

And when asked about the moderate Republicans in the U.S. Senate, Lincoln Chafee identified his little lunch crew of GOP moderates: "Yeah. We had lunch every Wednesday. Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Jim Jeffords, and myself. So two down; three left." No Gordon Smith.
