Darcy Burner's house burns to the ground; family unharmed

080701_ames_lake_fire_2At 7:45 Tuesday morning, Darcy Burner's house burned to the ground. Darcy and her family are safe and sound. The fire is blamed on a faulty lamp in her son's room.

Burner is running for Congress in one of the most hotly-contested Congressional races in the country against Congressman Dave Reichert (R-WA).

From Seattle's KING 5 News:

"The first thing I knew was he'd come tearing out of his room yelling and we look there was smoke coming out of his room," Burner said. "I grabbed Henry, and went up the stairs, out the door, grabbing my cell phone on my way to dial 9-1-1."

Burner, her husband Mike and Henry all escaped unharmed. She called Henry's actions "amazing."

"You know the fire department had come to his pre-school and talked to him about the importance of fire safety and what he should do if there ever was a fire," Burner said. "And he did exactly what he was supposed to do and not only save his own life but almost certainly saved ours as well." ...

A cat named Charlotte died in the blaze, but the family dog made it out. [Fire Capt. Frank] Glaser rescued the golden retriever, named Bruce Wayne.

"The dog was right there at the window, standing in a foot of water, looking out at me, so I hauled him out," he said.

In a statement at DarcyBurner.com:

I am also deeply grateful for the expressions of support from friends, supporters and others who have called to express their condolences and offer their generous and heartfelt assistance. I am so moved by all of the offers of a place to stay, or clothes to wear, or all of the other offers of help that have poured in throughout the day. While we are fine for now, your kind expressions of support and concern have helped to sustain me through what has been a long and difficult day.

For those who would like to do something to express their support, let me suggest making a contribution to your local humane society or animal shelter in memory of Charlotte, or to the Washington State Council of Firefighters Benevolent Fund.

I'm sorry to hear about Ms. Burner's cat. I am glad the rest of the family is safe.

Maybe this might be a good reminder to check that your smoke detectors and fire extinguisher are in working order.

Very true - it's definitely a good idea to check and make sure they're working. I read today that the fire department in Boring is going to be going door to door in some areas to check for working fire detectors and such. Someone flippantly said that the fire fighters must have too much time on their hands. To me, it's great they're doing that. It can help save lives - especially in the trailer parks where they're going to be doing this. A fire in a trailer can spread very quickly - not just within one unit, but to others as well.

I'm glad to see that her family is safe after the fire - and that it was apparently contained to just their home. The aerial shots I saw showed other structures very close by. It's sad about the cat, though - it can be a hard loss on top of everything else.

That's precisely WHY they have so much time on their hands. Because they're doing a good job of prevention.

And besides, what, we want more house fires? Huh?

Yea, it's just the attitude of people out here. It's the same people who are mad that the schools have free lunches for kids this summer, make fun of every person with a Hispanic looking surname that is in a news story, etc.

When an apartment in the Rockwood area recently caught fire, they said something about one less roach motel. To these people, more house fires among the poor just help clear out the "undesirables" in our society (the poor, Hispanics, etc. according to them). It's just funny how they complain about people who are racists, but they are some of the most racist people I've ever met.

There are definitely some crazies over at The Gresham Outlook site.

Burner's house afire. In a hotly contested race. The Washington newspapers and blogs must have a field day with their headlines on this one.

It's really sad to hear about her cat. Guess she wasn't secretly a superhero like the dog Bruce Wayne.
