Friday Follies: More Marino!

Carla Axtman

Yeah--there's been a lot of coverage around here about the various and sundry foibles of Tony Marino, the Republican running in Oregon House District 35 against Democratic incumbent Larry Galizio.

Perhaps if Mr. Marino weren't so target-rich......
Annulmentfraudredacted

In 1992, Tony Marino's marriage was annuled. Now all by itself in a vacuum, maybe that wouldn't be all that much to write home about. But according to the annulment court document, the marriage was dissolved by his wife due to fraud. (Click on the document to enlarge)

Given the context of all the other stuff we've uncovered: the fake PhD, the online ordination mill, the mea culpah release to the press on some of his financial problems--his wife wiping out the existence of the marriage based on fraud seems to fit right in.

Another thing that fits? Marino appears to have hired former NRSC tracker Tim Lussier to his campaign staff. As you may recall, Lussier was caught lying about his identity in order to gain entrance to a Merkley campaign event.

Given Lussier's short-term track record and Marino's long-term one....quite a match.

Every time I see another wacky Tony Marino factoid, I think of Dr. Nick Riveria, of "The Simpsons" fame.

His phone number is 1-800-DOCTORB ("The B is for bargain").

He attended "Hollywood Upstairs Medical College".

He helps Homer gain weight so he can go out on disability, "Now there are many options available for dangerously underweight individuals like yourself. I recommend a slow steady gorging process combined with assal horizontology."

    Priceless.

Maybe it's the people he perpetrated frauds upon.
    Just a guess.

No I am actually talking about certain bloggers who say that Marino is not a threat, but continue to attack him, using the same tactits they do whenever they are scared of someone.

I mean seriously, who is going to be attacked next? Uchytil or Oppenheim in Portland? Steiert in Aloha, Beaverton, and Portland? I mean, you really expect people to believe you are not scared of Marino?

Or maybe you are just jealous that your candidate isn’t as honest about his own problems as Marino is.

Just a personal observation but from what I've seen of the contributors here, they probably feel the need to share because it's just plain funny. It's so bad it's funny.

  • (Show?)

Okay. You caught me. I'm terrified of Marino. Scared. to. death. Shaking in my flip-flops.

Now that that's out of the way--

I gotta say..the annulment is pretty amazing. Stack it up with all that other stuff and this guy is a blogger's dream.

"Marriage Fraud" has so many delicious possibilities but I won't indulge. Trying to extend my Lenten discipline. That being said, I kinda am intrigued that someone with so many red flags would make a run. Is it gall, chutzpah or wild abandon ?

I don't think Carla's scared, but I don't see why she cares, either. The guy's a boob, let's move on to actual news.

Forgive me, but my understanding of the annulment process is that it applies only to marriages un-consummated. Too which I suspect fraud would apply - Reichwing, Religous, Nutjob = Closet Butt (tr)ucker and pedophile.

Well, the guy is like a train wreck. Too interesting to turn away from and a guilty pleasure watching and wondering how he got through any type of vetting process.

As to annulment. The historical reference goes back to the Roman Catholic Church. For the right amount of money, the patron could "purchase" an annulment, whereby the Church wouldrecognize that the marriage was never meant to happen. That way the poor parishoner didn't have to be worried about eternal damnation through ex-commuincation.

AJ526 highlights something interesting about conservatives and why they can't get "funny" right. They got the idea that the left has successfully used humor to politically damage conservatives. They feel that it's used as a weapon against them, but they only see the weapon part. They don't see the inherent value of funny.

I watched some clips (supposedly good ones) of The 1/2 Hour News Hour. It just wasn't funny at all. The bits had the trappings of humor. The actors used comedic body language and vocal inflections, but there were no jokes -- just mean spirited, unfunny jabs. It's almost as if no one involved had ever found anything genuinely funny. I imagine a conversation something like this:

Conservative Producer: The Daily Show is making conservatives look ridiculous. We need a comedy show to do that to liberals. Conservative Writer: I agree, O Powerful One. Tell me what you think of this material: How many liberals does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Conservative Producer: How many? Conservative Writer: Liberals are stupid and smelly and if they gain power they will turn America into a pleasure palace for gay, Muslim, atheist, terrorist, pacifist, hippy Nazis. Conservative Producer: Yeah, that will show those dirty liberals.

AJ3whatever thinks that ridiculing Dr. Rev. Marino must be motivated by fear of his candidacy. To AJ, humor's only purpose is political attack. He (and most conservatives) can't understand that Marino's candidacy is just plain ridiculous. I find it a nice diversion from more serious matters.

Your decision on electing a candidate should be based upon the content of the persons character, his history of successful politics, and his ability to influence and lead others. Character is what a person has done on a repetative basis. If you look at the history of this man it is obvious who you shouldn't vote for.

Personnally knowing Mr. Marino I can honestly say I have never met a more arrogant, self centered, egotistical person in my entire life. Never have I met someone who is so self absorbed to the point of questionable sanity.

I guess it all makes sense though, when you have someone who is all about themselves they are somehow convinced that even though they have some serious ethical issues, which are all driven by feelings of lesser than, they still believe they would be the best person for the job.

Im not afraid of Mr Marino so the guy above can relax. Fact is what you know about Mr Marino is just a small piece of the puzzle. He just lost another court battle for wrongful business practices that has costed him a few more thousands of dollars.

It is not a question of his businesses, PHD, married history, lying history, etc. It is the character of the current man that you should question. His character today is one of a flawed man seeking to benefit himself first. He can't help but make mistake after mistake again because he is not worried about anyone else but only himself. He is a man that internally would like to do good but is incapable of it at this point because of his diseased thinking.

Mr Marino, I commend you for exposing your history but we both know that you have done that to try to beat the boxer to the punch. Someone with your history had no choice but to bring it up first. Could you be a great politician someday? Absolutely, but you and I know you have some serious self development to do. Your problem is that you think you know it all and you think that way because you want to feel equal to others.

Facts are facts, you have made the bad decisions in your life on a repetitive basis because you don't know how to not make them. You are flawed and unwilling to work on yourself. The whole PhD thing is a need to feel important. Nothing more. You need to get help if you ever want to be ok with who you are. When you do you should learn how to feel ok with who you are and you will be able to start to have repetitive positive successes.

Running for office is about great leadership. Would you really want someone leading this district, county, city, state, or country, with flawed self esteem issues. Look what is happening now. Oops that is another persons fault, sorry Tony.

And does anyone else remember the spectacularly unfunny "satire" website that the Oregon House Republicans did? Wow, was it bad. The wayback machine only has the scrubbed and edited version. Too bad. The original was, um, really something.

Person A: How many Republican pliticians does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

    Person B: How many?

Person A: 20. One to solicit an undercover cop in a public restroom, one to harass teenage boys, one to funnel money, fifteen to take money from a corrupt lobbyist, one to screw in the lightbulb, and one to cover it all up.

Person A: Mr. President, how many Republicans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

President Bush: Who cares bout litebolbs. we need to stay in irack til the mishin is compleet and subsidzze oil companees. whats a litebolb anyhow?

Too interesting to turn away from and a guilty pleasure watching and wondering how he got through any type of vetting process.

Ahh...the vetting process. And there's the rub, eh?

  • (Show?)

Here's what strikes me about all this -- Tony did this whole mea culpa thing, purporting to confess all his mistakes, in hopes of jumpstarting his campaign with a clean slate.

Except he didn't. The mea culpa clearing-of-the-decks only works if you clear the decks. He left the really juicy stuff out. (Divorce vs. annulment-due-to-fraud, etc.)

Which makes the mea culpa pretty much look like an attempt at a cover-up.

Reichwing, Religous, Nutjob = Closet Butt (tr)ucker and pedophile.

    A bit unneccessarily phobic there.

AJ526, your own examples suggest that "terror" does not explain the interest. In fact the pattern that you suggest should exist doesn't exist. It isn't about Republicans with strong chances of winning (assuming for the sake of the argument your characterization), it's about one very weird guy.

It appears that aside from the Republican Party and individual Republican Legislators, The OREGON RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION is the only lobby group that sees fit to dine with the Rev. Dr. Marino.
