The Oregonian: Elect Jules Kopel-Bailey and Cyreena Boston
Two significant democratic primary endorsements from today's Oregonian:
Kopel-Bailey is an energetic specialist in sustainable development at a respected economics consultancy (EcoNorthwest). He has experience ranging from making microloans in Vietnam to working on the Sunnyside Neighborhood Energy project. He speaks of climate change as a critical challenge and an opportunity to build a vigorous new business cluster in Oregon. He has the potential to be a key player in a "freshman revolution" that could accomplish meaningful things in Salem for the entire state, not just Southeast Portland.
The Oregonian also gives Cyreena Boston the nod in HD 45:
Cyreena Boston, 27, has an inspirational personal quality and an impressive resume that includes teaching and mentoring children and organizing Democrats in the field. Ask her what she thinks has been wrong with Salem in recent years and she offers a refreshing answer: Too many people don't have enough manners or reverence for the legislative process.

There's a typo in the link to Jules' web site, so following it throws an error message. It should be http://www.julesfororegon.com.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've fixed it now.

Great news, we need people like Cyreena down in Salem representing the people of NE Portland!

I am very excited about The Oregonian's endorsement of Cyreena. She will make an excellent representative for HD 45.
I've worked with her for a few years now on various activities, including the Mult Dems Celsi Dinner, Faith Caucus, and most recently doing her web site. I never cease to be impressed by Cyreena, her understanding of the community, and the feeling that the district will represented extremely well in Salem if she is elected.
I work on Cyreena's web site, but I speak only for myself and not the campaign.

Wow, some young blood (Kopel-Bailey is 28, in addition to Boston, 27). Regan Gray is all over my neighborhood, what do people think of her?

All three of the progressives are strong, passionate, driven, talented and bring a wealth of knowledge and smarts to our great state. I urge everyone to support the, now. Please, donate, canvass, just support them! Come out tomorrow!

So, the Oregonian catches up with "Chuck for..." and my backing of Cyreena. I don't back her because I have a Portland neighborhood axe to grind, not from distant Baker City, I back her because I personally know her quality and her commitment and how good that voice will be for all Oregon. She has the skills and understanding to make an outstanding contribution to our legislature.
The first of very few endorsements my blog has made was for Cyreena and that happened because I feel very strongly about it. I don't make heroes out of candidates, but that doesn't stop me from very occassionally being very impressed and very enthusiastic and I am. HD45 you are very fortunate to have this opportunity.
This is the best I can do towards knocking on doors or putting up signs, Thanks Chuck

Regan Gray is definitely the progressive/liberal pick for District 42. She's equally as staunch a liberal as Diane Rosenbaum.
And trust me when I say that we can't afford to lose liberals in the Oregon Legislature. In our most Democratic house seat, we need someone who will fight hard for our ideals without compromise. Things like paid family leave!
Though I think Jules is a respectable choice, I fear he's too moderate for this hyper-liberal district. If he's elected, I think the net effect could be to move the legislature to the right.
We need someone who will fight for Democratic principles tooth and nail without having electoral consequences for their commitment. That district is HD 42, and that candidate is Regan Gray.

We need to lobby Jules on the beer and wine tax. He's in favor of keeping it the lowest in the nation. Hopefully that's not linked to his big gifts from those folks.
I probably favor Jules in that race, although Teddy Keizur's work ethic is inspiring, but I really hope that Jules will reconsider his feelings on the issue.

I agree as well that Regan Gray - running for House District 42, is the candidate to support in the May primary for many reasons.
Foremost, was her personal involvement and dedication regarding the development and creation of new law while working in Salem. As Chief of Staff to Representative Diane Rosenbaum, Regan became fully immersed in the process of helping constituents find solutions to their problems. Her involvement in helping to craft what is now referred to as 'Amy's Law' is an example of what a person can expect from her regarding any issue. Her support on this important health issue also underlines her committment to helping all of us in achieving better health care for our families.
For those who travel to Salem in order to meet with their representative on a particular issue, from my own experience I can assure you that I felt listened to when I met with my representative for the first time It was Regan's gentle style and sensitivity that I remember well as she encouraged and arranged for me to meet with my representative. Meeting with your rep. for the first time I will tell you can be unnerving.
I believe she understands the careful and delicate process that is required in accomplishing meaningful legislation in Salem, and that she will continue to be an advocate for those who are in need.
I am fully supporting her interest in representing District 42 this year, and I would like to encourage all of you to vote for her in the primary in order to send a compasionate voice to Salem who you can count on to listen to you.

I think it's great that so many young (really young!) people are running for state office. But what ever happened to the idea that experience counts for something? What's Cyreena gonna do - go down to Salem and lecture everyone on their "bad manners"? That sounds like the viewpoint of a political novice.

To answer Jack's above concern, I have no worries about Jules Kopel-Bailey. To point, I believe he can and will be a staunch progressive voice for Portland and Oregon in our state house. He has an especially strong background in the environment and sustainability, which is just what we need of incoming Democrats.
Indeed, to look at those supporting his cammpaign is to look at a laundry list of great progressive groups and people: the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, the Oregon Education Association, multiple Metro Councilors, former Gov. Kitzhaber, the working families of many, many local unions, and countless other Portlanders.
Regan and Teddy would also do bang-up jobs in Salem, but, knowing Jules and past work/ideas, I'm confident he'll be the tried-and-true progressive we need and a tireless fighter for many great causes.

Cyreena Boston is a fantastic person. The manners comment would stick whether she is 27 or 72. Treating one another with respect goes a long way in working with people. To deny that is more telling about the denier than Cyreena.
Experience has us with high income tax, no new gas tax, a hacked up land use policy, Multnomah County's taxes carrying the state but unable to help its vulnerable populations and bitter battles on wedge issues (choice and equality) instead of things that move citizens forward. Bring on the young - we've got the flexibility and the stamina.

Having personally spoken with three of the candidates for HD42, I find the idea that any of those three (Teddy, Regan, Jules) is not a true progressive patently absurd (unless your definition of "progressive" doesn't have room for someone to oppose a regressive tax targeted at one of the key industries that fuels Oregon tourism). While I'm not personally as opposed to the tax as Jules is, I think it would be silly to consider it a disqualifier for the coveted "true progressive" label, especially given his work on the environment and sustainability. All three are great young candidates and we who live in the 42nd are blessed with an embarrassment of riches and a tough choice this May.
Apr 18, '08
None of the 42 candidates look good to me yet. It is considered such a safe progressive seat that they feel free to work on "big picture" issues of their own interest, but could care less about curing district ills. I've got 14 liquor licesnsees within three blocks of me, and most of them are promoting what you could call "destination drinking" by hard partiers from outside the neighborhood. Broken glass. Vomit. Noise. Stabbings. Nobody cares. But, hey! Let's have a district heating coop! Forget that these jokers couldn't be trusted to organize a bake sale. Let's let the hippies run steam pipes under all our homes!

Fred, what has "experience" been getting us all these years? Not that much. We need somebody who's going stand up for the people who make up the future of this country, who continually get overlooked because people in office are too beholden to special interests and political gaming. In certain places, yes experience counts. But right now we need somebody who will make sure that when all the "experienced" people are done and retired the people looking after them are literate enough give them the right pills (which hopefully will be wonderfully affordable through universal healthcare).

I find it disappointing that The Oregonian does not distinguish among the three D HD45 candidates in giving its endorsement. Boston, Dembrow, and Coney each have inspirational quality, impressive resume, manners, and a reverence for the process.
We recently suffered through ABC's Stephanopolous' amateurish treatment last Wed; why do we have to also suffer through The Oregonian's (lack of) reasoning? Oregonian editors, give us reasons based on the ISSUES, please.
The Oregonian's endorsement: "House District 45 has been held by Northeast Portland Democrat Jackie Dingfelder, who's running for the state Senate. Voters in her district, which takes in Maywood Park and much of Northeast Portland north of I-84, face a difficult choice, but we're placing a bet on Cyreena Boston's potential, just as we did two years ago when we endorsed rookie Ben Cannon against a set of more experienced opponents.
Michael Dembrow, 56, is a longtime community college teacher, president of Portland Community College's faculty union, and a member of the State Board of Education. He has won respect for his low-key integrity and such accomplishments as helping part-time community college instructors win health benefits. The engaging Jon Coney, 37, has seen the Legislature inside and out and speaks candidly of the prospects of real revenue reform in Oregon. His vigor and experience make him an appealing candidate.
Yet Cyreena Boston, 27, has an inspirational personal quality and an impressive resume that includes teaching and mentoring children and organizing Democrats in the field. Ask her what she thinks has been wrong with Salem in recent years and she offers a refreshing answer: Too many people don't have enough manners or reverence for the legislative process.
Democrats in Districts 42 and 45 almost cannot go wrong, no matter how they vote, but we urge them to elect Kopel-Bailey and Boston."
