Oregon GOP: That's it? That's all you got?

Kari Chisholm FacebookTwitterWebsite

So, I got an email the other day from the Oregon Republican Party* and it included the usual rundown of party activities - along with this "just for fun" internet 'toon:

Seriously, that's all you got? Nothing substantive? Just a silly video with Democrats in drag?

Personally, I think it's kind of funny. But that's just my goofy sense of humor. But with all the strong progressive stuff coming out of the Legislature in 2007, you'd think the Oregon GOP would find something meaningful to attack Democrats on.

Oh wait, the progressive policies passed by Democrats were, y'know, popular with voters. So this is all they're left with.

(* Good luck finding my email address on your list, punks. Ha!)

Democrats in drag, huh? Careful there, Gay Old Party, careful!

Seems there's a former Washington state rep in Vancouver, one of Lar's best friends, natch, who told Washington State Police he likes to dress up in frilly women's clothes, pay for thuggy, over-gelled men to screw him up the who-know-where sex, all night long, ON THE TAXPAYER DIME, then cry like a baby when the newspapers find out.

Cuz Kinky Curtis was too cheap to pay the hooker the money.

May God in Heaven help us all because there are DOZENS more creepy, sad, Republicans like him out there, just follow them on their political or show business trips, to places like Spokane and, say, Tel Aviv, where a chubby, balding semi-gay lad can have a gay time far away from his fat wife and children in the Couv.

Republicans are in serious trouble if they think this is funny. There are serious people who were involved in the Legislative Comm. process who are looking forward to the Feb. session as a way to stem any problems unforseen when Sine Die happened in 2007 (revenue forecast changes, reaction to 49 and 50 results, holding hearings on and possibly sending out a referral for a ballot measure as an alternative to something collecting signatures --that last was actually discussed when the Public Comm. on the Legislature was meeting).

Perhaps more telling, there is beginning to be serious discussion of issues like education by some Republicans. Rather than just bashing teachers unions while letting district management off the hook, Mike Huckabee had some very interesting things to say about education last night.

    http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2007/11/01/1/an-excerpt-of-the-charlie-rose-special-edition-the-candidates

Somehow I don't think Minnis, Scott, Lynn "our caucus has decided on a number for schools" Snodgrass would have reacted well to such education topics Huckabee discussed: the role of music and the arts (and PE) in schools, treating teachers like the professionals they are, criteria for when a school is failing--and a failing school being taken over meant firing not only the Supt. but the school board the need for more individualized instruction.

There are Republicans who have gotten out of the habit of serious discussion of issues--it is all about the R team vs. the D team. Just look at the House caucus websites for the last election: Big picture of Wayne Scott and all incumbents/challengers pictured next to their name, district number, PAC ID number. Democrats had the road map and the blog.

A smart Republican would find out who made this and tell them "Hey, folks, this isn't funny in a general distribution sense, as a lot of people are wondering if we have serious answers to problems. It isn't even all that funny in a partisan sense--is that all we want to be known for is making fun of the majority leadership when so many of our elections are decided by people who aren't registered with either major party?".

For the record, I wouldn't have thought that was funny if it had been Minnis and Scott dancing to the music from "Can Can" in 2005. And did all that stuff about calling Minnis "the Red Queen" help Rob Brading get elected, or just contribute to the general nastiness?

This is why conservatives don't have a Daily Show.

If you think it's funny, Kari, why can't we think it's funny? I don't think the point of the video (or its inclusion in the ORP newsletter) is to level any kind of meaningful attack or point out why people shouldn't vote for Democrats. It's a joke.

There's plenty of "meaningful attacks" that can be made, but someone with too much time on their hands spent a little quality time with photoshop and this silly video turned up.

Haha. Laugh. It's funny...not to be taken seriously.

And unlike LT, who takes everything too seriously, I would have laughed if you had put Karen Minnis and George Bush's head on the can can dancers.

SAVE DEMOCRACY, VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT!!

Ok, in the shadow of a Republican Anti-Gay Gay Sex Scandal passing around Republicans dressing in drag with a Democratic diguise does'nt seem to be the best idea!

The impression that a pink tutu on a masked Republican might be unusual is a hard sell even within the most supportive audience!

The Imaginery Joel Grey Republican I'd suppose, too bizarre to imagine even in Portland.

    Happy Thoughts;

Let's have the Republican leadership under Minnis from the last legislature lead a chorus with Kevin Mannix singing the Joel Grey part of "Money Makes The World Go Around" in the next convention!!

I think it would have the Log Cabin Republicans lining up to register as Independants that stil vote against their own interests! Nothing New, we lived it already!

Dang, I thought this video would have gotten more people riled up.

Like Kari, I see humor in most things, and I'll bet like me, a few responses leaped to his mind when he watched the video. Here's a few of my assorted responses: 1) I have met Mssrs. Merkley and Devlin and others, and I don't remember their heads being that big. Hmmmm. This might be some Hollywood tomfoolery where computers are used to merge heads on bodies. Is that technically possible? 2) Damn these boys can dance! Just another amazing talent of our outstanding Democratic leaders. 3) Where are all the upstanding, normal-size-heaed, non-Can-Canning Republicans? Waiting for an available stall at the Men's Room at MSP? 4) Golly Gosh, this is really gonna destroy the Oregon Democrats at the next election. I mean WHO would vote for Legislators who are so obviously unfit for office?! WHO I ask?! 5) Boy, the production values on South Park have just gone to shit.

It occurs to me that doing this to Democrats is just kind of harmless stupidity (not really funny, IMHO); but if you did it to Republicans (particularly depending on who) you might hit too close to home and/or their phobias.

    Jeff,

There is a conservative Daily Show! It's on Fox News and it's called the Half Hour News Hour. There are some subtle differences. For instance, the Daily show is funny.

    Here's a taste.

LT, I saw that Huckabee interview last night too and I agree that he has some interesting, unorthodox (for a GOPer) ideas.

For those of you who have been angry at the legislative (not to mention Congressional) brainless GOP statements about education usually including "but the teachers union..." or that if NCLB took time away from art and music "don't you want all kids to be able to read and do math?", watch the interview online and find some ammunition.

Quoting Huckabee to Republicans takes it out of the realm of partisan politics. He talks about dropout prevention, evaluating whole schools not by "snapshot tests" but by how they do over time, evaluation of district management and not just "teachers better produce results or else", the importance of primary grades, math and science teachers, PE teachers as important to student well being, and so many other intelligent things. In words which would prob. annoy Minnis, Scott, Richardson et al, he says "Teachers are professionals. They have professional degrees", and that they shouldn't be treated like factory workers.

I heard somewhere that Rep. Richardson's new job in the leadership is policy research or some such. How about the Republicans (not to mention anyone involved on the campaign of a Dem. challenger to an incumbent Republican) debating education as seen by Huckabee's remarks as opposed to

    http://www.blueoregon.com/2005/05/representative_.html

Or are Oregon Republicans so devoted to political games that they would find such intelligent debate difficult?

I think the can-can footage is from the cult classic Escape from New York.

  • (Show?)

As a general observation, one thing that really struck me about Huckabee's remarks was that they underscored why, historically, Governors have much better chances of being elected President than legislators do. Governors have to govern and that experience forces them to deal with pressing issues in a much more pragmatic way. Huckabee aknowledged as much in the interview.

A more specific thing that struck me, in addition to the things LT mentions above, was how the Huckabee administration dealt with failing schools. Not only did he not vilify teachers or teachers unions but when the state took over a school they would immediately fire the principle and the school board. He overtly placed the onus of responsibility (for failure) on those responsible for managing the school rather than on those on the front lines - the teachers.

I also don't remember hearing anything from Huckabee about school vouchers or alternative schools.

It was very heartening to hear a Christian Conservative GOPer address educational issues so realistically, honestly and without resorting to divisive ideological sound bites.

I wouldn't vote for him for President. But I would happily call my legislators and suggest they support a (future) Huckabee nomination to head the Department of Education. The man has some good ideas!

  • (Show?)

Oh man...next time I see Peter Courtney on campus, I'm going to have to comment "nice legs".

  • (Show?)

I met Mike Huckabee when he came to Portland a couple of years ago. Obviously he is a major loon in certain ways that disqualify him from receiving my vote for any office (e.g. creationist), but he is smart, sincere in his desire to help people, thoughtful, really funny, and immensely likable.

  • (Show?)

That silly video has been circulating around for weeks (perhaps months?). It was sent to me a long time ago and I did not put it up.

Now did anyone say "it is the best the GOP has got?" I mean is it labeled anywhere in the video that "hey this is our best work...best shot?" No.

It is just a silly attempt by someone, at playing with the Jib Jab site.

Is it funny? Nuh uh. Does it deserve some ridicule from folks for it's lamness? Sure (I'm sure we have all told one of those jokes that just made everyone groan.).

But it was silly for Kari to say that this is the best the GOP has. Please... perspective here.

    Funny? Me too!

I'm a conservative and for my money I hope the republicans get their collective posteriors branded next fall. I will no longer settle for 'least offensive'. You can probably guess which I consider 'most'.

I'm willing to see Socialists run rampant for a few years so Joe and Mary Oregon can see what Neil and Debby Portland are really about. ...just enough rope as they say.

Long term...I give Socialist/Liberal/Progressive/Democrats short shrift. I think most Oregonians will too. Just one mans opinion.
