More Merkley/Gonzales Roundup...

Yesterday, Jeff Merkley called for the impeachment of Alberto Gonzales - the first U.S. Senate candidate to do so.

Here's two more. Over at Lynn Siprelle's new-ish blog SEPDX.com - straight outta the people's republic of southeast portland - she declares that "Jeff Merkley gets it":

At least someone among the Democrats understands what the people want: Accountability--and NOW, not next month or God forbid next political cycle. Jeff Merkley, who's running for the chance to take on Gordon Smith in 2008, has come out in favor of impeaching Alberto Gonzales.

And over at Ridenbaugh Press, Randy Stapilus draws parallels between the sometimes-raucous town halls on Iraq conducted by Senator Ron Wyden, and the "Impeach Gonzales!" call by candidate Jeff Merkley:

He seemed to barely escape with his skin intact from the Portland event (more than 300 during a noon hour), and Eugene wasn’t a lot kinder: Wyden wasn’t nearly critical enough of the Bush administration to suit these Oregon crowds. ...

We’re not suggesting here that those 300 were typical of all Oregon voters. But we do think there’s a change in the political center of gravity, that some ideas and concepts not quite mainstream even a few months ago may be becoming so.

Call that preface to today’s announcement from the new Jeff Merkley Democratic campaign for the Senate (against Republican incumbent Gordon Smith) calling for the impeachment of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. ...

Three or four months ago, you might have called that daring. Today, it’s a signal that Merkley’s aiming for the Oregon Democratic mainstream.
