Louisiana Gov. Blanco: Out.
From the the New York Times:
Louisiana Democratic Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, whose political standing plummeted after public frustration with hurricane recovery efforts in her state, announced Tuesday that she will not seek a second term this year.“I will focus my time and my energy for the next nine months on the people’s work, not on politics. After much thought and prayer, I have decided that I will not seek re-election as your governor,” said Blanco, who said as recently as last week that she intended to seek re-election.
In taking herself out of the running, Blanco is avoiding a difficult re-election contest Oct. 20 against the leading Republican candidate, two-term Rep. Bobby Jindal, who lost narrowly to Blanco in 2003 — but who had been polling well ahead of the governor in his rematch campaign.
As always, the excellent Times Picayune has more in-depth coverage.
Popular former Sen. John Breaux is considering running and has recently been the target of a statewide ads financed by the Louisiana Republican party.
Discuss.

Good news for Democrats on the Governor level. CW is that John Breaux is the Dems only shot at keeping that Governorship.

We've been covering New Orleans events off and on since Katrina and will continue to do so when we want. We also covered the FEMA reimbursement issue here -- more than $1.5 mil. in previously unpaid Katrina expenses -- which obviously has a direct impact to Oregon taxpayers.
Also, we're not going to tell Peter how to run his blog, but will note his most recent post concerns California, not Oregon.

It's sad that she has to go, but it will be better in the long run. Frankly, she's a bit of a victim in the Katrina thing. First, the feds did nothing. Then, they came in and tried to take over the whole operation with no local input. Gov. Blanco was too aggressive in beating back the attempts at a full federal takeover, resulting in poor coordination between the federal troops and various states' National Guard troops, including Oregon's. It's another example of this administrations "our way or the highway" approach. Emergency response is supposed to be a joint effort, but that takes people willing to work together in good faith.
