Bandon: America's Fastest Town

Kari Chisholm FacebookTwitterWebsite

Earlier this week, I ran across a curious little ad in Wired Magazine:

The rugged Oregon coast is the last place you'd expect to find America's first 2.5 gigabit-connected town. But here's where it all started, thanks to fiber-to-the-home technology from Hitachi. Watch what happens when the world opens up to the tiny town of Bandon through the country's fast broadband connection.

Bandon, Oregon? The fastest town in the country? Even more curious, Hitachi produced a five-minute short film that barely mentions their products or services. Amazingly, it's a great little postcard from one of Oregon's great small towns.

I was blown away. Here it is:

Watch the film, "Smalltown Oregon Logs On"

We should all have that kind of speed. And the Bells got billions from the feds a while back to do just that. But they blew that money, and raised rates on us to boot. Now they say they need to charge websites for speed, or raise rates on customers just to keep up what we have now. Every other country in the world with broadband has much faster rates than the US. South Korea and Japan have 100Mb to the home for less than half of what we pay Comcast or the phone companies for 5-8Mb here. Thank the corporate fat-cats at the Bells for nothing...

As a resident here in Bandon and as a business person who spends the majority of time on the internet prospecting clients and accessing many different types of data, Comspan/Hitachi (fiber company) is a blessing. The speed in which downloads are complete and webpages load is amazing. I've had cable internet, I've experienced DSL and remember the days of dial up...never again will I go back to any of them!
