We endured quasi-pornographic cartoons during Carter and Clinton's Presidencies, and when the Republican's got into office suddenly political cartoonists are an endangered species! The Bush Administration and their corporate cronies, along with screaming evangelicals have made the practice a thing of the past!!
When America lives with Democratic control of a House of Congress, and the Presidency we see a free flow of opinions from both side of the spectrum, when the Republicans hold power we get all red!!!! This is the kind of double standard that creates intolerance with any criticism, which allows ideologues to promote ridiculous, if not outright scurrilous policies that always end up the job of Democrats to clean up!
I take issue with the characterization that the political cartoonist is not serious, and should not be a topic line. The fool having licensed to criticize the king in the public square is the humbling experience necessary for a sense of humility being part of his rule, the political cartoonist is the democracy's fool.

I believe Smith's "flip flop" matters tremendously. So what is wrong with a cartoon describing it?

What matters more, our hurt feelings and anger and "I told you so"s, or stopping the war? If the latter, I say we welcome Smith with open arms, regardless of his motives.

I'll welcome Gordon Smith when he does what any politician with any moral sense ought to do: abandon the republican party and its core constituency of right-wing morons. I don't insist on conversion to democrat, independent will do.

And, it should be noted, Gordon Smith has simply made a somewhat ambiguous speech (his staff was quick to point out that his reference to "criminal" wasn't about W's crimes) He's always been good at making moderate noises and voting right-wing. Let's see some actual votes that indicate a real change of heart/mind.
