Hey! Is that $50 in your pocket? Use it or lose it...
Kari Chisholm
It's time for my annual reminder...
The Oregon Political Tax Credit is one of those progressive ideas that makes Oregon a great place to live, work, and play.
Through our tax system, the State of Oregon gives each tax-paying Oregonian a $50 gift. But you can't keep it. Instead, you must either pay it back in state taxes -- or donate it to a qualified political campaign or cause.
To put it another way: By donating $50 to a political campaign of your choice, you can reduce your taxes or increase your refund by that same $50. That's right: it's a full 100% credit, not a deduction.
The bottom line? By contributing $50 to a progressive political campaign, you can make Oregon a better place - and it won't cost you a dime. Married, filing jointly? It's $50 per person - so you and your spouse can donate $100 and get it all back!
So, as the year comes to a close... think back: Have you given at least $50 to a political campaign, political party, or political action committee? I sure hope you have. But if you haven't, the time is now.
Consider a donation to the Democratic Party of Oregon, or maybe the Bus Project PAC. Or perhaps, you want to help provide some 2008 seed money to one of your favorite Oregon candidates. Or, perhaps a presidential campaign.
Use this thread to tell us who you've made donations to this year. Make a pitch for your favorite organization (and be sure include the donate link!) There's only a couple of days left - so let's make some good things happen.
(And head on over to OregonTaxCredit.com for more details on how and where to claim your credit.)

Hey... if you think a strong showing by a third candidate helped Erik Sten avoid a runoff with Burdick, you could give it to me!

Nice try Dave. However, you never know unless you ask. My wife and I gave to Jessie Cornett, and the DNC. We couldn't afford to give the full tax credit amount, but have in years past. It really is great that our tax system can provide incentives that acutally promotes the common good. I would like to see the cap raised to $250 for couples or $125 per individual. But, this could pretty much be done away with if Oregon had a publicly financed system like the Voter Owned Election system we have in Portland. I would keep the tax credit with the raised limits to help fund other cuases like the DPO or the Bus Project.

Please consider giving your tax credit to the Multnomah County Democratic Party. We've done a lot in the past year to work on the infrastructure of our county party, developing a plan to support and train up-and-coming candidates, support those running for local offices, and more.
Part of the reason we were successful this year was because we were able to have paid staff for the first time. By having Blaine and myself on staff, we were able to keep the office open more often, oversee more canvasses and phone banks, develop a voters guide and door hangers, and more. We worked together with Justin, Jesse, Jared, and others at the DPO to implement the plan for the county.
Now that we're in an "off year," we have 60 local races up this coming May. Races that the state party does not get involved with because they're non-partisan. But these races are important, as it's where many of the people who will be running for larger offices (Portland City Council, state legislature, Congress, state-wide office, etc.) in the future will come from. But there has been very little support structure for people running for these local special boards (school boards, community college boards, water boards, etc.). We'd like to change that.
Please consider giving to the county party and helping us to continue with our plans to strengthen the party, our members, and our candidates.
You can give at: http://www.multdems.org/donate
Also, be sure to mark down January 26th on your calendars. It's our annual Caffe Democratica-- spaghetti dinner, silent auction, and democracy fair. You may remember our standing room only dinner in 2004 with Congressman Dennis Kucinich. This year we're bringing in fellow Texan Jim Hightower.
Details and tickets are available at: http://www.multdems.org/spaghetti

I'd like to give Dave $50 but as Oregon's political tax credit has never been put before a public vote, I don't want to jeoparize his ideological purity by using such a illegitimate system.

So, Cinderella, if you haven't already made $50 in political contributions this year, get on those glass dance slippers and dance your way to the Jackson County Democrats to make an end of year contribution. The best thing you can do for democracy in the Rogue Valley is to make a contribution to the Jackson County Democrats and forward this message to any of your friends and family who share your values but may not have taken advantage of the Oregon political tax credit.
Make your checks payable to JCDCC and send to PO Box 4474, Medford, Oregon 97501. Please include your name, address, occupation and employer. The State requires us to collect this information on all donors.

I think that supporting your local Democratic County Party is a great idea. For those of you in Lane County and those that love us but may be living elsewhere, please consider supporting the Democratic Party of Lane County. We had a great effort in '06 and plan to continue to build capacity to get even more Democrats elected. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Blue Oregon readers for all the support over the past year. We had some tough elections and with your help and the help of many other people and organizations, Democrats won all of the key races in Lane County.
For anyone who contributes more than $20, you will qualify to become a member of the Democratic Party of Lane County for one year. You will be sent a DPLC membership card and can brag to your friends that you are a card carrying member of the DPLC.
Just go to www.dplc.org where you can make a secure online donation or send your check to the following address:
Democratic Party of Lane County P.O. Box 11138 Eugene, OR 97440-3338
All the best

Are you saying this credit only applies for donations made to Democratic Political Groups???
Hopefully, not as my husband, two adult children, best friend and myself will all be getting our tax credit for the donations made to the Republican groups. Thanks for the Tip and great information!

So you can get the credit by donating to Republicans. You can get the credit AND make Oregon a better place by donating to progressive campaigns.

Hey, take it easy on Anna, if she (and others like her) weren't here this would be nothing but a self-effacing "echo chamber". Anna brings diversity and we need to be tolerant of that.
