Swiftboat Gang comes after Darlene Hooley
The general counsel of the California Republican Party and the Economic Freedom Fund just dropped some $165,000 on TV ads targeting Congresswoman Darlene Hooley. The primary funder of the Fund is the same guy who funded the Swiftboat Gang that attacked John Kerry.

The ad accuses Hooley of voting to "raid the Social Security surplus" and "spend money on wasteful pork-barrel projects" such as a $200 million "bridge to nowhere in Alaska." The ad claims Hooley co-sponsored a bill that would allow "illegal aliens to be eligible for Social Security."Hooley said she has argued for a "lockbox" plan that would keep Social Security funds out of the hands of lawmakers, and she noted that it was an Alaska Republican who added the bridge project to a massive transportation bill. Hooley said she voted for the bill because it provide money for vital Oregon highway projects.
Hooley said she was among the sponsors of a bipartisan bill that would help address a flood of people who are in the United States illegally. The bill would create a way for undocumented immigrants to become citizens, who then would qualify for Social Security.

The California-based Economic Freedom Fund will spend $165,000 on television ads that target Hooley, according to a Federal Election Commission report filed Monday. Texas millionaire home builder Bob Perry, the primary financial backer of the anti-Kerry Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads, this year provided $5 million to the Economic Freedom Fund. ...The group's treasurer, Sacramento attorney Charles Bell Jr., did not return a call to his office Tuesday. Bell, an election law specialist, is the California Republican Party's general counsel.

Sure, we need vital Oregon construction in a state where our road dept. is dedicated to have no new roads. When does "vital" put in front of the words road funding justify a ton of pork within a bill.
Darlene has shown no qualities of principle during her tenure there. It's time to toss her out and get someone in of whatever party who will say no to pork laden bills.
Saying no to pork is what is "vital" for our future. The road bills can be taken up in a separate bill thereafter.
Both she and her opponent ought to be pinned to the wall on the campaign trail over pork spending.

What Darlene voted for, as with every other member of the Oregon delegation, was a comprehensive transportation reauthorization. The $250 million "Bridge to Nowhere" was a disgusting waste of money, but on balance, this almost $300 billion bill was critical to Oregon's economic competitiveness. There's no option to vote against the pork and support the road projects later - it took 6 years to agree on this bill in the first place.
If you want to say no to pork, say no to the party in charge, the party of the bridge to nowhere, but don't blame Darlene for not shooting off her nose to spite her face.

Thank you Erickson for Congress---the campaign which doesn't mention veterans issues or any other issue for that matter.
What we need is a new majority in Congress, not Republicans running boilerplate nasty ads.

Classic Republican projection (with extra astroturf, for traction!). The Bridge to Nowhere Rep. was Don Young of Alaska, BTW. I think he even wanted to name it after his wife.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing yet another 75-25 creaming flash across my MSNBC crawler for OR-5 (along with yet another 88 to 12 tanning from OR-1), while the seat just north of me, formerly held by the Pedophile from Neverland Ranch, joins the approximately 25-30 others that will flip from Republican to Democrat this election.
The Swiftboat Punks may have money, but the NRCC sure doesn't. Not if they want to protect Hastert, Reynolds, and whatever cardboard cutout they prop up to replace Foley, who's still on the ballot.
The Republicans are in national freefall. This doesn't change that. Oregonians still know who's had their backs for countless terms.

Saying something with a bit of truth to it, although extremely misleading, seems to be politics de jour. Darlene voted for a massive bill that included funds for the Bridge to Nowhere. so did most Rs, I bet, but that salient info is left out. I'm reminded of OurOregon's campaign against the Fair Elections measures 46 & 47. It seems progressives are picking up Swift-Boating tricks from the dark side.

Well Hooley got herself in a bind and someone needs to help her bail herself out. I know for a fact from first hand knowledge how unorganized her campaign is. I even know some staffers from a Florida congressman who were going to come out to help her campaign (They let the staffers take unpaid leaves of absence to do that in congress) and her staff didn't even know that this program was in place. I hope she wins because she's a really good congresswoman but she needs to get her $h!t together real quick. It's almost as sad as watching Ted K stumble over himself.

Whatever anyone says about Hooley's campaign, where is Erickson's campaign? He isn't even as vocal as Zupancic was on issues, and 1994 this ain't.
Of course congressional campaigns need to be organized, but having lived thru Al Ullman's loss to Denny Smith in 1980 and Jim Bunn's win for the open seat in 1994, I don't see how Erickson is victorious.

Erickson has already said that he wants to privatize social security - be sure if you're making calls to seniors to make that distinction. Darlene is 100% for social security and has been working on it with other Oregon Democratic House members.

There's not a lot Erickson won't say or do to get elected, IMO. His reasons for running have nothing to do with the issues; it's all ego.
Anyone can say they want to streamline gov't, make it more effective, etc, etc but exactly what are his plans for change? He doesn't have any real statements on his website explaining HOW he plans to do what he claims, just lofty statements that many people can make (I support schools, duh).
Someone needs to start asking him HOW he's going to do these things he claims he wants to change. Someone needs to start asking him exactly WHAT the issues are in his district (besides the vague issues he's mentioned). I'm willing to bet that if these questions are asked, the public will soon learn that he doesn't even have a decent grasp of what the issues are and what it takes to change them (assuming he actually cared enough to do anything about things).
I'd be willing to bet that if Erickson gets elected, a lot of the people voting for him will rue the day they did.

This is not 1994 and he is not a member of a famous political family like Jim Bunn was. And Erickson is so clueless about the Oregon political scene he probably doesn't realize Darlene Hooley defeated Jim Bunn with a lot more substantial campaign than he has.
About ME doing whatever it takes---that also applies to Republicans. Tonite I got a robocall with McCain's voice asking me to vote for Erickson. All that does is lessen my respect for McCain. Has he even met the guy?
