Sorry, Shirley. We're smarter than that.
In today's Oregonian, Tigard resident Mark Padgett slammed Shirley Parsons -- the GOP opponent for Rep. Larry Galizio:
I just received in the mail a flier from Oregon House District 35 candidate Shirley Parsons. It states she was "patrolling our streets as a detective with the Portland Police Bureau." Since this district is in Tigard, I wonder if she was moonlighting or just can't read a map.Seriously, I think it's deceptive on her part to try to make people here in Tigard think she has been involved in police work here. While I respect her former position, this seems like a misguided attempt to counteract the fact that her opponent, Larry Galizio, is once again endorsed by the Tigard Police Association.
Sorry, Shirley -- we're smarter than that.

Not to mention that detectives don't "patrol the streets".

House District 35 includes the city of Portland.

Yes, Emil, it includes some small bits of Portland. But the mailer was mailed to Tigard, not to mention the business of "patrol" vs. "detective".
A more correct statement would be "keeping Portland's streets safe as a detective with the Portland Police Bureau." -- but that wouldn't ring quite as nicely.

Kari, This crap has to end. It wouldn't matter if the streets were in Hines, Oregon. They are all OUR streets. State and local dollars go into them. This is exactly the stuff that turns off us rural Democrats. You are ATTACKING one of our nations finest, and not just the message. Grow a set. I'm really thinking this may be the year I go "red", and let me parents spin in their graves if they must, but I really think at this point that they'd understand. KJ

Karrie, "A more correct statement would be "keeping Portland's streets safe as a detective with the Portland Police Bureau." -- but that wouldn't ring quite as nicely."
is an "attack"?
That is the same mentality as saying that sending a letter to the editor saying "great speech, no followup" is an "attack".
Or maybe you are just a Republican agent provocateur trying to stir up trouble by calling a comment on wording an "attack".

Just to set the record straight here -- District 35 now includes a tiny sliver of Portland. However, in the past when Shirley Parsons was a Portland cop this piece of the district was actually part of Mary Nolan's turf in HD 36. It was re-districted after the 2000 census and the first election in the newly configured district was in 2002 (Max Williams). In a nutshell, Shirley Parsons is stretching the truth to the breaking point with this inaccurate campaign claim
Larry Galizio has been a great representative for the district and we need to keep him in the Oregon House.
