You know, the problem with diplomacy is...

Mari Margil

At a press conference today on North Korea, President Bush said, "You know, the problem with diplomacy is it takes a while to get something done."

I've heard the same complaint about baseball, from a certain special someone (Kari) of this very blog. And yet, it remains America's favorite pastime.

To keep the president on the diplomatic course, I offer a couple of cliches for him to chew on:

Patience is a virtue.

and...

Good things come to those who wait.

In our go-go-go, fast food, convenience store, instant gratification society - who but our top elected officals can guide us for the long term?

Remember Mr. Bush, slow and steady wins the race.

...the problem with diplomacy is it takes a while to get something done.

Well I suppose he expects us to draw the conclusion that war is the better course of action because it takes less time "to get something done."

But we're a few years into this war, and although we ARE getting "something done," it's nothing to be happy about: tens of thousands dead, billions of dollars wasted, the world hates us, our country is divided, opportunities have been squandered...

    Shame on us.

Actually, he was talking about diplomacy with North Korea, explaining to an impatient -reporter- why we can't just fix the situation overnight.

Bush makes enough gaffes that there is no reason to distort and mislead to try to make him look bad.

What's worse is that he indicated it's much easier to get things done alone rather than working with others. Last I checked, working with others ultimately makes the task easier. I mean, if I ran my entire business on my own, without the efforts of others and the other businesses I rely on, my business would go down fast. Sure, there are times when the other businesses I work with make me want to pull my hair out, but that's bidness. It's life.

After Bush proved to them that he would invade any country, any time and for any reason, the other 2 members of the "axis of evil" would have to be crazy not to develop a deterrent as soon as possible.

I, personally don't believe we would have invaded Iraq if they'd really had WMDs. Some people think Bush is doing a 180 by talking about diplomacy, but he doesn't have any choice. I don't believe his handlers will let him start WW3.

Would a slow and steady approach be like the Red Sox 100 year plan to win the world series?

Never never never believe anything Bush says.

I thought y'all knew that by now.

I still maintain that baseball is boooooring.

or even a single game: the Dodgers gave up a 3-run homer to Barry Bonds tonight (the drugs are still having some effect, especially with a rookie pitcher in his 3rd game). but in the bottom of the 8th, Nomar hits a 2-run jack to win the game.

in the end, the good guys beat the forces of evil. rooting for the blues is always a good thing.

I would really be interested in what sort of diplomacy you would expect to practice with the North Koreans. When Ms. ALbright ventured over there with an "iron-clad" promise not to build nuclear weapons in exhcange for us giving thme nuclear reactors, surprise, they lied to us and borke the promises.

Instead of ripping on Bush (probably not the smartest guy admittedly) give me an alternative. I think we have tried starving N KOrea for what now, 15 years, and he keeps on going (probably thru a back door deal with the PRC.) I think Iran is pretty much the same situation.

"Instead of ripping on Bush (probably not the smartest guy admittedly) give me an alternative"

You'll find one of two answers here. If Bush moves diplomatically, the answer is military. If Bush moves militarily, the answer is diplomacy.

Mari - sorry, but I have to disagree with you, baseball is not America's favorite pastime. It hasn't been for some time now. Football (and I don't mean the one with the round ball) passed baseball long ago in terms of TV ratings, advertising dollars, etc...

So, while its nice to want to think of America, baseball and apple pie, we have moved on - kind of like we should all do with GW. He will go away, just not fast enough.

Scott -- I think you misunderstood the terminology. Football is America's favorite sport. Baseball, not being a sport, is just America's favorite "pastime". As opposed to checkers, darts, or foosball. Then again, poker might be catching up to baseball.
