I LOVERMONT

Mari Margil

Vermont.  My old stomping ground.  Known for maple syrup, Ben and Jerry's, the monster in Lake Champlain, and politics done differently.

During the traditional Town Meeting held today, the community of Newfane passed an article which  "calls on Vermont's lone member of the House, independent Rep. Bernie Sanders, to file articles of impeachment against the president, alleging that Bush misled the nation into the Iraq war and engaged in illegal domestic spying."

I'd like to read the article, but I can't find it.

According to the article, 1,600 people live in Newfane: 121 voted in favor of impeachment. Yawn.

The other three "copycat townships" (Dummerston, Marlboro, and Putney) have a combined population of less than 5,600 and less than four hundred of them voted in favor of impeachment. Yawn again,

Rep. Bernie Sanders (Independent-Vermont) issued a statement saying that although the Bush administration "has been a disaster for our country, and a number of actions that he has taken may very well not have been legal," given the reality that the Republicans control the House and the Senate, "it would be impractical to talk about impeachment."

    Maybe they could secede, instead.

here's a link to the AP story

Here's the agenda for Newfane, VT town meeting: see Article 29 (right after Article 28, $980k for town and highway operations)

You know how it goes: 28. lay some asphalt, 29. impeach the President, 30. call for any miscellaneous concerns, and 31. make headlines around the world for all the wrong reasons.

I was talking to Harry Lonsdale the other day who had just come back from a Cindy Sheehan anti-war rally in San Diego. The calls for impeachment and the anti-war emotion that he relayed to me were overwhelming.

Needless to say I hope that everyone catches the wave and the March 19th rally is as good a place as any to start.

    See you there.

Sorry folks, but I think Ed Schultz is right. If the energy going into impeachment rallies and activism were to go into winning the 2006 elections, there would be a Democratic Congress in 2007 incl. a Democratic Speaker of the House.

ABC's THE NOTE contained this today: However, putting out the port fire does not mean the President's poll numbers will improve enough to avoid losing control of Congress in November.

Until there is a Democratic House, why impeach?--President Hastert?

It was one thing when Ford became VP and there was a serious person to replace the impeached president. Right now even if Bush/ Cheney were impeached, what good would it do to have someone from Capitol Hill replace the impeached president and vp?

Read HOW THE GOOD GUYS FINALLY WON by Jimmy Breslin to see impeachment done right ---the impeachment of Nixon was not for the impatient, but it was put together well. There is a story in there about Tip O'Neill going to Wyoming, giving a serious speech incl. about impeachment on behalf of the Wyoming Congressman who had decided to support impeachment. Tip realized when the people at the Chamber of Commerce or whatever were nodding their heads that the impeachment battle was over--Nixon just didn't realize it yet.

Until there is such support in states in Middle America/ Plains states, why isn't it better to put the energy towards elections in an election year?

Agreed, let's win the mid-term election. At the same time, it just feels good to say the word IMPEACHMENT, doesn't it? I mean, we can have some IMPEACHMENT for breakfast and win the mid-terms for the rest of our meals, no?
