$340 Million in Oregon....

Some lucky Oregonian won...

A ticket sold in Oregon matched all six numbers drawn to win the $340 million jackpot in Wednesday's Powerball game. The winning numbers are: 7-21-43-44-49 Powerball 29

Could it be a BlueOregon reader?

I won $3 of the $5 I spent back. :-) I'd love to be debt free and buy my own island, I'm glad it wasn't me. That's 340 million problems I really don't need. But I'm curious to see if it's someone I know. Or a friend of a friend of a friend of someone I know. And I'm curious to see where it was sold. It was probably sold in Jantzen Beach to someone from The Couv. ;-) Everyone just be on the lookout for someone mysteriously absent from work tomorrow........

Alas, as funny as it would have been to shutter Communique and then win Powerball, it was not me.

Rumors are percolating that it was won by Republican Gub candidate Jason Atkinson.

    Can anyone verify this?

It was won in Jacksonville, Oregon - Southern Oregon. Probably no one from the 'Couv.

Well, if the winner takes the lump sum rather than the annuitized amount, the State of Oregon won more than $13 million in taxes last night. Not too shabby. Even if it was purchased by someone who lives out of state, they have to pay Oregon taxes on the windfall.

Oh, and the buzz around Jacksonville is that it was a single mother who works as a schoolbus driver (saw it on KGW 11 o'clock news when they were interviewing Jacksonville locals). We'll see in a few days. If the winner is smart they'll be consulting with attorneys and accountants before they ever even head to the lottery office. I just hope it was someone who deserves it and not someone who's already wealthy.

Is it true that you'd have to pay Oregon taxes on it even if you lived out of state? Is that the same as working in Oregon and living out of state, where you have to pay Oregon income taxes? Well, damn then, my plan (after I win someday) was to get an apartment across the Columbia before I claimed the prize, I suppose that's out.

Also, I wonder if they've got half a head for politics. $340 million could go pretty damn far if they decided to contribute to PACs or candidates or anything like that. It'd be nice to think that they're a Democrat, at least, and will support progressive causes, as I would, but I'm not sure about the demographic in Jacksonville... though maybe a single, bus-driving mother would be more sympathetic to left-leaning causes. Or maybe they'll just forget about the rest of us and think only of themself and her kid(s) now that they're set for life.

Yes, you have to pay taxes on it in Oregon - no matter where you live. Just like NBA players who play at the Rose Garden.

    It'll be about $110 million after taxes. Hopefully it's a D.

I talked to my mom today and she asked me if I'd heard about this. It turns out one of her neighbors is the mother of the man who bought the ticket. He bought the ticket in Jacksonville, but in fact lives in Medford. It was interesting to hear this personal take on the story.

From what I know, it sounds like someone very deserving won the money.

    David,

See if you can find anything about his political leanings or interest in philanthropy. Thanks.

    Doran,

Normally I would be interested and would try to do that. However, because I am so far from Oregon right now, it's not possible. In the off chance my mom knows something more I'll ask her via email, but sometimes it takes her awhile to respond. I only phone her every other week.
