Girls Rock Camp 2005
Erika Meyer
I've spent the past week working as a volunteer guitar teacher at Rock n' Roll Camp for Girls. My nine-year-old daughter is a camper, singing with the "Rockin' Kitty Cats." (She wanted the band to be called "The Sprites" but none of the other band members would go for it.) I am so glad we can do rock camp together.
Rock Camp showcase will be Saturday, July 30, at the Wonder Ballroom 128 NE Russell. Tickets are $5, available from 8 am - 5 pm the week of Rock Camp (July 25-30) at the camp site or at the Wonder Ballroom door starting at 6 pm day of the showcase. Rock Camp showcase tickets usually sell out.
Rock camp volunteers and students converge from all over the world. Local businesses donate generously. Visits from The Donnas, The Gossip, The Blow, LKN, and other professional women in rock give girls a chance to see, hear, and interact with rock n' roll role models. At the showcase, girls from 8-18 will perform an original song with an original band formed only a few days ago.
Rock camps for girls are springing up across the country like a thousand flowers, but this is the original. The energy is tremendous, synergistic, magical.

Saturday night's showcase was great. Camper band The Ready, which opened the show, gave us hope for the rock 'n' roll future. They were awesome!

Hey, if they can turn out the next Donnas, or Sleater-Kinney, where do we send donations?

Donation info is here: http://www.girlsrockcamp.org/donate.htm
I know it is much appreciated, and I do believe there will be some increasingly significant bands coming out of this camp.

I would agree about the bands about to come out of the camp. From what I hear, The Ready, which opened up Saturday night's show, is about to record an album. The camp is also starting it's own label.
