The Bus Stops Here.
According to the Murmurs column in today's Willamette Week, the Jefferson Smith for Governor boomlet is over. They've apparently secured a denial from Jefferson, who's calling the whole thing "ridiculous."
WW also noted all the hullaballoo here at BlueOregon in reaction to their initial item last week.

Just read this week's WW story- didn't mention the deep investigative work it would have required to verify the Gov. race thing:
Jefferson: Hello, this is Jefferson. WW: Hey, Jeff, you running for Governor? Jefferson: Nope. That's ridiculuous. WW: Thanks!

Like the press' job is just take call and take someone's word for it?

Only an ego as colossal as Jefferson's would think that a "fervent supporter" planted this story.

B!x:
Yes, actually, it is the press' job to call- but then to verify and dig deeper.
But are you defending the WW's decision not to contact the "potential" candidate? Do you not think "Yes, Im running" "No, Im spending more time with my family..."- or whatever response is worth including? If so, why is this not relevant info to be included in the original story?
I like WW; think this was sloppy reporting.

Slider, actually Jeff does have his fervent supporters. Check out this serious (and yet hilarious) comment from late November.

Thanks, Kari, for the plug!!
Hilarious? Now, c'mon - Jefferson could do the job just as well as Dean. Maybe even better in fact. :)
Donnie Fowler certainly ran a respectable campaign for chair despite his age and lack of experience on the executive level (compared to other candidates in the race).
As for being a fervent supporter of Jefferson's, I'm not sure I'd describe it that way. I saw the OR that existed before the Bus & the OR that exists now. The difference is quite amazing. And I know that without Jefferon's talents, energy, and optimism, that change would still be waiting to occur.
I'm a fervent supporter of anyone willing to fight the good fight - esp someone willing to do so at the expense of his own comfort, privacy, and personal dreams (which I can attest to the fact are not power or money- based).

WWeek: Willey Week's a great paper, and I'm a loyal reader. I don't know the protocol for the "Murmurs" thing, but given the title it would seem it's appropriate for a more casual set of standards. As a general matter, they do wonderful work. (And even if I thought that they tended to poke a bit sharply, I am hereafter foreclosed from any such criticism, lest it seem self-serving now that I've been on the receiving end of a (very mild) mini-poke.) They're a credit to our city.
Wackiness: It's been a weird coupla weeks, and the rumblings were alternately flattering and humbling. Given the challenges of what we are workin' on, I know I can sure use the encouragement. And (at least according to a coupla post-ers with fake names and email addresses) I can sure use the humbling too! :-)
Plug plug: please come to the May 21st Bus Project annual gala -- "Through the Looking Glass." We're honoring "Vera Katz and Oregon's Pioneering Women" and "Jonah Edelman and future Oregon Leaders." (On Vera: Vera spent a life in public service with myriad successes. Everyone has their detractors and, given the length and depth of her service, it's amazing she has as few enemies as she has! She's a neat and inspiring lady. On Jonah: I know that it's not a frequent thing for a nonprofit to honor the head of another nonprofit, but we wanna honor young leadership generally, and demonstrate support for public interest partners. He's a neat guy, And he and his team do great work, and they are a credit to the State.) Sojourn Theater is playing, there'll be lots of cool music and stuff, and I hope people come. (The last three Bus annuals have been pretty epic, and we hop not to blow it this time.) Check out www.busproject.org and get tickets -- and sign up for a monthly membership and get a free ticket for a friend. End of plug plug.
Onward, JS
