The Nick Fish Show
Kari Chisholm
There's a new weekly Portland public-affairs TV show in town. Starting this Sunday morning, two-time city council candidate Nick Fish will launch Outlook Portland with Nick Fish on the WB.
This week, the inaugural guests are two BlueOregon contributors - Jack Bogdanski and Randy Leonard. Nick tells us that there will be a show blog, where he'll be discussing the issues - and extending the conversation online with all of you.
Details: Sunday morning, 6:30 to 7:00 a.m., on Portland's WB (KWBP 32 / Channel 3).

Seeing Nick Fish campaign for city council, he came across as a very friendly an approachable fellow. I'd say that hosting a public affairs show suits his demeanor better that hanging out in city hall.

Hey now -- don't knock my councilmen! Mayor Potter is the most approachable and friendly politician I've ever met....and let's not forget Blue Oregon's own Randy Leonard who goes out of his way to solicit citizen input here on pertinent national issues....and of course there's Eric Sten who advocates for affordable housing and also has gone out of his way to engage and address citizen involvement and input on his proposals and issues...
...all in all -- Nick Fish would've fit in this city hall team rather nicely, I think. It's too bad that there isnt room for one more -- but -- I'll settle for Nick in the media -- the media could certainly use his energy and integrity these days.

Kari--
Thanks for the plug.
I'm excited about the show.
Randy and Jack were good sports, helping me launch the program.
My daughter told me I have a face for radio. In that spirit, I hope to "grow" into the job.
A few program notes: next week's show is devoted to Mercy Corps.
Down the road (April 17) Tom Potter will join me to review his first 100 days on the job.
We hope to have a blog up and running soon. I will read comments and questions on air.
Finally, WB may move the show to Sunday at 5pm, if we generate an audience.
Cheers.
Nick

I certainly wasn't trying to insult the members of the city council. I just felt that Nick is an extremely outgoing and funny guy and it seems that the formal atmosphere of council meetings doesn't take adavantage of these qualities as much as a talk show does.
I'm sure he would have made a great councilman, but City Hall's loss is KWBP's gain.

You haven't been to many Council meetings since the start of the year, have you? It's been downright loopy in there sometimes.

I guess not, sounds like I've been missing out on some fun times.

...in my focus on the most recent and high-publicity issues surrounding our Commissioners, I neglected to mention the most excellent work of Dan Saltzman in relation to education and his oversight on the Childrens Investment Fund program as well as Sam Adams and his incredible community support -- especially as it pertains to North / Northeast Portland and his advocacy in affordable artists housing.... (for whatever its worth, Sam, if you're reading this -- as an artist, I support the concept of artistic service-exchange to leverage the affordability in your model)

What's an audience look like at 6:30 am on a Sunday? That's got to be one of the most brutal time slots I've ever seen. It seems somehow unfair to guage the popularity of a show by an audience that will have a very hard time tuning in.
No promises, but I'll set my alarm. On the upside, at a half hour, I may be able to doze back off afterward.

Seems like Nick must get kick-backs from TiVo and the video tape industry.

6:30 am on Sunday? I'll have to set the vcr to record. At 6:30am I'm in the process of getting that last, vital a.m. REM sleep. We love technology!
Looking forward to watching the show when I get up!

As a supporter of Sam Adams last year, I did meet Nick at a house party last fall; I have to say that I hope that his shows will be as informative, balanced and thought provoking as what he presented at the house party.
Good luck, Nick. I hope that you will try another run at it in the near future.

"No promises, but I'll set my alarm. On the upside, at a half hour, I may be able to doze back off afterward." says Jeff Alworth.
Whadarya talking about Jeff?
At the end of Nick's show it will be 7AM....time to turn on Oregon Crossfire on KXL 750!

Randy,
What no sleeping in at all??
No rest for the weak or the wicked?

Mar 25, '05
Really. You people need to stop letting me be the only one who gets up for Oregon Crossfire.

After the fact? Well, it was a start.
But, having just been reading several excellent pieces on the dearth of woman and minorities on the opinion pages, and then getting Fair's report on the same issue, but on the airwaves -- I couldn't help but look at the line-up and say to my husband, "Ah, yes. Three white guys. Wow, who'da thunk it?"...
And, while Jack Bog did a good job answering Nick's question about the mainstream media -- given that he doesn't work in it -- I would have preferred hearing what someone like Susan Nielsen, who actually does work in the field, had to say on this issue. (No offense Jack, but I like going to the source...)
