Election 2004: a poem
Kim Stafford
At least it is over.
The villain you could not abide
or the savior you trusted
is now in charge
and the wondrous complexity
of this world will begin
to whittle him down to size.
He is only a president, and you
are a citizen of the world.
Election has ended, but you
have begun—you, elected now
to be smarter, tougher, more fiercely
alert, active, compassionate.
All those campaign promises—
what’s to be done—now
they are about you. You are
local commander, witness, friend
for the prosperity of every child.

Kim, thanks for giving lyric voice to the emotions I have been struggling with these past weeks.

"He is only a president, and you are a citizen of the world."
It's so hard to write political poetry and keep the poem in it.
You did it. Nice "turns"
Thanks.

Thank you for the new poem. After reading some of the recent angry diatribes stemming from the "An Open Letter to Lars Larson" post, I immediately went to your poetry for some quiet.
