Small-Town Portland Love

Jason Evans

Walking from my building to the Max station downtown on Wednesday I dropped my cell phone without noticing. As I was sitting on the train I realized that my phone was missing. Naturally, I assumed that I had left it at work. However, I remembered looking at it as I got on my elevator.

*groan*

Do you know such agony as to suddenly realize that the super-amazing deal you got on two-for-the-price-of-one cell phones has suddenly been flushed? Think of having to pay $300 or more to replace a phone you got for "free". That, friends, was my hell on Wednesday.

As I got home, I walked in the door and immedately asked my partner to call Verizon and suspend service on my phone. While he was on the phone with them, I decided to give my cell a call from home.

Low and behold! Someone answered *my* phone! A very nice woman had found my phone on the sidewalk and taken it home. In fact, she had even called the "last number dialed" to try to find the owner.

She came downtown the next day to deliver my phone to me with a smile and a "I lost my phone too one time" karmic story. Bless her.

I only got her first name: Selina. I can't verify the spelling. She's younger, perhaps 26 or so. About 5'9 or 5'10, dirty blonde hair a bit longer than shoulder length. I assume she works in an office as she was dressed "business professional". I know she teaches dance lessons in the evenings. Obviously she works somewhere around the Galleria Max stop.

If you know her, tell her she's somewhat famous now. I appreciate her, and karma continues on. One deed doesn't begin or end a karmic cycle. We simply step on the Karma Express and embark on the appropriate journey.

Thanks, Selina. You're a gem. You make Portland a great place to live.

We just had our own cell phone "hell" story. After signing up for "free" Nokia phones for an AT and T family plan...two of our three phones suddenly quit working just after the warranty had expired. When we checked we were told that this particular model has had "problems"...and since the warranty had expired and we had a year left on our contract, we would have to bite the bullet and buy new replacement phones...or extend the contract and get new "free" phones. Ay Caramba! No concern about replacing our defective phones so that we could fulfill our contract obligation! Fortunately a nice person who shall remain unnamed, but let's just say he is a professional in the field, has given us two of his old phones to use until the end of our contract period, so we are back in business. He said if we disclosed his identity, he'd lose his job! So thank you Mr. unnamed professional...We once again have our family cell phones...And don't have to extend our contract with ATand T...leaving us free to pursue the best deal out there when our contract expires. Ay Caramba!
