Paulie Brading
At 3:00 PM this afternoon the summary report of the general election in Jackson County delivered some exciting news to the hard working Democrats in Jackson County. Obama won by 47 votes!
Barack Obama 49,090 or 48.58%
John McCain 49,043 or 48.53%
Total voter turnout in Jackson County 85.17%
For comparison sake -- Bush won Jackson County by more than 8,000 votes in 2004.
Change all the maps on LiveOregon. Jackson County is BLUE!
Good work all and thank you!

Woo hoo! Way to go Democrats and volunteers in Jackson County.
This is exactly what I mean. You don't have to win through dirty handed tricks. You win by talking to and connecting with voters.

Congratulations. I was about to claim that Baldwin was a spoiler until I noticed Nader's slightly less negligible results.
Interestingly, or perhaps not, Nader beat Baldwin in every county except Grant. Nader + McKinney beat Baldwin + Barr in all but 7 counties.

However, the four of them combined easily beat Write-In.

Congratulations, Jackson County. Does anyone know what the final results were in Deschutes County?

Final results aren't out until this coming Tuesday. You may be able to get unofficial totals from their web site or by calling, but nothing's final until Tuesday when the election is certified.

And I would like to send a personal congratulations to you, Paulie, and your entire Jackson County Democratic Party for the work that all of you put in to make this happen.
Great work!

Something said tonight in a meeting I was at around the LGBTQ community (currently being pitted against communities of faith and of color, was that Obama, according to the numbers, would have won Oregon even without winning in Multnomah County (and one other one-I forget). Where would I even find those numbers to back that statement up?

Yeah, except that some counties are already releasing the soon-to-be-certified "final official" (not "final unofficial") results. Benton County, for example.

Paulie, you guys have done a phenomenal job. Congratulations.

There is no question in my mind that both Medford and Bend are becoming bluer with every year that passes. That fact does not reflect so much a change in philosophy amongst longtime residents of those two cities as an influx of Californians. Both communities have had a lot of people migrate there from outside Oregon.
The other factor at play was the Republican candidate himself. Conservatives were so uninspired by McCain that many foolishly boycotted the election and a lot of conservative Democrats, who normally wouldn't have, went with the better orator, Obama.
Either way, you guys seem to be winning at the moment. The playing field clearly is tilting your way and it pains me to see you so happy. Nonetheless, I think I will stick around and see how things go in 2010 and 2012. This country has some tough economic times ahead and voters are not known for their patience. If it turns in time, the recurring business cycle may save us. I doubt your policies will.
If Repblicans can find cadidates who can put two words together, they may come back to life, but that is far from a certainty. Right now we are getting what we deserve for nominating a loser like McCain.
Anyway, congrats on your victory. You were energized and worked hard to win and it paid off for you at the ballot box. There is no where near that kind of energy on our side at the moment.

Reality bites Bill. Tax and spend on public benefits was trumped by borrow and spend more on private wealth generation. Meanwhile, those in Southern Oregon struggle to make a living and realize the promise of trickle down was hollow indeed. Buh bye GOP.

Wow, way to go! If you've got a source for that, I think it's worthy of adding to the Wikipedia article on Jackson County… I'd be happy to do the honors.

The "borrow and spend" label does not generally fit rank and file Republicans. It has from time to time, especially Republican officeholders in the state legislature. They are such chicken hearts at times. They feel compelled to outbid the Democrats, especially when it comes to spending on education, even whn they don't believe the additional funds are neeeded.
Several Republican legislators have confided over the years that they do not believe schools need more money, but that they are afraid to say that for fear of being on the receiving end of a bad editorial from their local newspaper. It is that kind of unprincipled cowardice that leads to "borrow and spend."

The problem I have is the false choice we are offered. It is not a choice between tax and spend and borrow and spend. The right choice is simply not to spend as much and make the case to the public that the additional spending is not necessary. Period.
