Event details: Hillary Clinton in Oregon on Saturday
The initial details about Hillary Clinton's upcoming visit to Oregon are starting to trickle out.
An event in Eugene is booked, while an event in Portland is still TBA. From the Roseburg News-Review:
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will speak Saturday afternoon at South Eugene High School.Clinton is scheduled to speak at 1:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium, 400 E. 19th Ave. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. for the "Solutions for America" rally.
Clinton will speak that morning in Portland. Details of that appearance have not yet been announced.
Get more details and sign up at Hillary's Oregon HQ.
Also, on April 12, Chelsea Clinton will speak at the DPO's platform convention - along with a "major" surrogate from the Obama campaign. From the DPO's statement:
Chelsea Clinton will speak on Saturday, April 12 at the 2008 Platform Convention in Eugene.Anyone wishing to attend can sign up for the event at www.oregondemocrats.org
It costs $100 to sign up for the Saturday Clinton Campaign event at the Eugene Hilton. More details on the time of that event will be released soon. That $100 purchase also qualifies people for an Obama Campaign event to be held over the weekend. One $100 purchase gets people into both events. The DPO is also expecting a major figure from the Obama campaign in Eugene and will release those details as soon as they are available.
“Presidential history may pivot on Oregon’s vote,” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. “We are thrilled to welcome Chelsea Clinton to Oregon and eager to hear her speak in Eugene!”
Besides the presidential campaign speeches, the April 11-13 convention at the Eugene Hilton will include a forum for the Attorney General candidates, trainings on Get-Out-The-Vote techniques and working with the media, and a chance to shape the Democratic Party of Oregon’s core platform.
Discuss.

Well, that's good to know. I felt bad not dishing out the $100 to go see the "significant" representatives from the campaigns, but now I know that the Clinton representative isn't worth spending the money anyway.
If the Obama campaign sends someone truly significant (Richardson? Kerry/Dodd/Kennedy?), I still might consider going, but at least I know I'm not missing on the Clinton side of things.
Apr 3, '08
I guess I should be excited?
Apr 3, '08
Someone should ask her why she didn't fight George Bush and Mitch McConnell as hard as she is fighting to get the nomination for herself. Why no "SHAME ON YOU GEORGE BUSH" when he repeatedly vetoed SCHIP? I heard nothing from her this session.
Apr 3, '08
Come on SDG, she was busy ducking sniper fire.
Apr 3, '08
So Obama fills Mac Court while Clinton plays...South Eugene High School.
Hmmm, wonder who's going to win Oregon?

Thanks for playing Clintons but this is Obama country. We like honest politicians in Oregon.
Be careful - I heard the landing at PDX can be really dangerous. After all we are "little Beirut" and you never know if there are snipers sitting on Mt Hood.
Apr 3, '08
Tough crowd.
Apr 3, '08
Can't wait to see her in Oregon! Why don't you guys lay off for this one thread and let us Clinton suppporters be excited about this?
Apr 3, '08
I'm an Obama supporter who has a generally good opinion of Hillary Clinton and would like to see her speak.
Incoming!!!!

OK. at least we should acknowledge her new support from Richard Mellon Scaife, founder of the Arkansas Project, publisher of the American Spectator and a man who has repeated accused her and her husband of complicity in murder and cocaine smuggling without a shred of evidence. Read the editorial.
Can't say she's not reaching out.
You go girl.......

Ah, all these “progressive” “intelligent” comments by Obama supporters.
There was a question on another blog: why Clinton supporters can not think that Obama supporters are not brain-washed, that they made rational decision to support Obama.
From these comments I see only hate. I see unhappy snippy people. Men who playing tough while hiding behind laptop, but kissing boss… at work. I see women who are jealous that another can be more successful.
No, Oregon is not Obama country. It is one of states in the big and great country that called United States of America. It is just sad that “progressive” people are so disrespectful.
Apr 3, '08
Viki--it was I who asked why Obama supporters keep getting called cult followers by some pundits and pro-Clinton bloggers. I'm still wondering. You are of course correct about disrespect directed at Hillary Clinton and her supporters. Sigh.
I would like to see Hillary Clinton speak in Portland, but not in a school cafeteria. I sincerely doubt she'll change my vote, but she will have my ear.
Apr 3, '08
Well Viki, EVERY Obama supporter is EXACTLY like the people who post on blogs. Yep, every single one.
Apr 3, '08
Congratulations Viki, you have the most hateful comment in this thread:

In none of the previous comments were Clinton supporters attacked. Please don't pollute this forum with your hate masquerading as 'anti-hate.'

Wow. Super mind-reading powers! Not only can you determine gender based on initials, but you know their motivations.

I am an Edwards-turned-Obama supporter and I am very excited for Clinton to come to town. Not for me but for my Mom, who is undecided at this point. My mom has been a progressive democrat for as long as anyone can remember. From her hippy chick days in high school, to the time she organized a union in one of Ross Perot's textile companies and through her time living in the tiny conservative town of Oakridge she has always stood up for her beliefs. The one thing in life she has always missed doing was seeing a Presidential candidate speak and having the chance to shake their hand. It's something that she has always wanted to do and now at 58 she has the chance to do it. And to put icing on the cake it is first woman to actually have a chance at being the first female President, something she didn't think she would see in her lifetime. So even though this doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the comment threads I just thought I would throw this out to the blogosphere: I AM HAPPY FOR YOU MOM!!!!

I wonder if her reputation of not paying vendors is contributing to her inability to secure event details in Portland?
Also, hatred is irrational. People have good reason not to like Hillary "our nominee can't win, and he might be a Muslim" Clinton. ("Is he a Christian?" "As far as I know.")
Apr 3, '08
Welcome to Oregon Senator Clinton, and Chelsea! Die hard Obama supporters like myself look forward to hearing what you have to say.
Apr 3, '08
Apparently Hillary "mis-spoke" when she assured southern Oregon that she would come and visit.

I'm not decided between Clinton and Obama yet but all this slagging of Clinton is not making Obama more appealing.
Apr 3, '08
My feeling is that a lot of blog comments are very emotional and used as an outlet to vent frustrations. If a person isn't going to vote for a candidate based on what an anonymous person writes on a blog, then that's just really pathetic. Become informed!

I would certainly hope your decision isn't based on the comments of a few of Obama's (or Clinton's) supporters.

To joeldanwalls .
I honestly don’t know why Hillary camp schedules her visit at High school. Was it only one place available, was it last minute decision, finance… I can not guess. I am also not her strategist to figure out what appearance would be more effective.
I am glad that she is coming to Oregon. Her real fans will go to see her at any place I know that she will be back in the middle of the month.

No, it certainly won't be.

I wonder if Hillary will accuse Barack of plagiarism again. Or maybe she will endorse McCain's BFF Gordon Smith.
Apr 3, '08
Would Gordon Smith have to give up his Senate seat if McCain picks him for the VP slot on the ticket?

Am I the only one who thinks it is odd when a campaign says that they're hold an event "in Portland" and then schedules the event for Hillsboro? I know it drives me crazy when I start planning to go to an event in Portland, only to find out it is actually in Beaverton, Hillsboro, etc., which take a long time to get to from Gresham.
Apr 3, '08
I received a robotic call from Darlene Hooley offering tickets to Saturday's event in the Hillsboro High School. "Press 1 for a reservation"
Seating starts at 8:00AM. If you didn't get an invite, you could probably call her office to ask for one.
Kulongosky will also be speaking there for anyone going.
Hillary's campaign is having some money problems, so a High School is probably a cost-effective way to go.
I was impressed at how quickly they set up the autodial reservation system.

I'm a Union Journeyman working downtown PDX, all our union brothers are opposing Barak, anti-American and anti-White racist comments don't fly with some Union men, the little snide comments from the college liberals here are just a sign that the democratic party 'elite' has nothing but contempt for patriotic blue collar workers, we'll be proud to support Hillary in Hillsboro or any where else and if Hillary is not nominated I and many other of my union brothers will be sitting this election out since we can't in good conscience vote for anti-White racists, folks ashamed of the USA or corporate war lackys like McCain. If something doesnt change in the party soon and our interests as American Union men are continually shit on we'll be shopping for a party that will represent us and values our support.

SDG, Hillary Clinton didn't need to "accuse Barack Obama of plagiarism," it was all over youtube.
The biggest problem I have with this campaign is how blinded the Obama supporters I know personally (and have seen here on Blueoregon) seem to his weaknesses. I think he'll be an okay candidate if he wins (I hope Hillary wins). If he does win I think it's time his supporters really start looking at what may go wrong in this campaign. Start saying "screw you for calling an african american preacher a racist" (because we all know how silly that notion is). Start saying "McCain is an anti-choice, anti-environment, piece of crap war monger, etc, etc... But lay off of Hillary Clinton already. It's getting so tired. If you really think Obama will win why waste your energy on her? Why say "oh, what's she gonna do now? call him a plagiarist? Well, the truth is that his speech was word for word the same as the other guy and you'd better believe they're gonna use that in some spiffy ads come sept, oct & nov. So figure out a way to defent that or try to figure out a way to move the public's attention away from that because acting like he doesn't have any skeletons isn't going to serve you (or my Party) in the end at all.

Hey Disgusted Union Man -
I think you are lying - you are not a union member, just a cowardly racist spamming the blogs, too scared to use his real name.
I happen to personally know PDX union members supporting Barack.
Apr 3, '08
SDG, I happen to disagree w/what the union memeber said but telling yourself that this does not exist is going to bring your candidate down. Instead of telling this person he is a liar perhaps you should tell this person why a union member should support Obama. Ever think the anti-Clinton stuff might backfire? I feel like the anti-Clinton folks really need to take it down a notch and calm the freak down. Do you want to live in a bubble? If you live in a bubble McCain will win this election and that scares the crap out of me. Please start defending your candidate.

Wake up Obama Supporters! Obama is a Poet,Lyricist,Novelist who could hypnotize you with words. You are selecting a President for a powerful country on earth, do not confuse your young minds by those cosmetics. He just became a senator in 2005, how much political experiences he has had. What you know about Hilary is a known present, you may not satify with her past accomplishments. But to Obama, he is an unknown future, all you have heard and known are a fresh man with good words and hope. There are no facts, or data highly proven his public experiences. I represent for 10,000 Asian people in Oregon to speak for Hilary. Hilary has Bill as a great experienced partner. She surely a sucessful President. Voting for her is just like you buy one and get one for free I will also continue collect more people for HILARY. Oregon is definitely Hilary State. For those who has threaten Hilary and speak down of her, you are so low. Go Hilary!!!!

All-for-Hilary:
And he was a legislator in his state before that (beginning in 1996). He's been an elected official (state legislature or U.S. Senate) for 12 years now.
Senator Clinton became a U.S. Senator in 2001, which means 7 years as an elected official (U.S. Senate).
It's not his speaking style and elegant words that bring us to his cause. It's his positions on the issues, his plans as President, etc.
Apr 4, '08
The congressman who Obama "stole" the speech from is actually a good friend of his, and he gave Obama total permission to use his remarks. A columnist I read likened it to roommates borrowing clothes.
If you honestly believe that Clinton is the best candidate, then long may you wave, but you need to chill with the you-Obama-supporters-had-better-be-nice-to-us remarks. If you're willing to subject the country to four years of John McCain because your "inevitable" candidate lost, you don't have much of a right to call yourself "progressive." Sometimes your candidate loses (Heck, my candidate usually loses), and this election is about a lot more than your hurt feelings.
Oh, and this is about the only political blog I've seen that didn't feature poorly written, barely coherent shills for Hillary Clinton. Thanks to All-For-Hillary and Disgusted Union Man for rectifying that...

Yeah, this is kinda fun-if-transparent.
Apparently the Ghost Writers imagine that Asians write and speak pidgin English while the blue collar guys are supposed to be racists and borderline illiterate.
As a 56 year old welder married to an asian American who runs a company that builds custom software (and is very active in the asian community in Oregon), I'm calling Bullshit.
This stuff insults the very groups that you claim to represent.

Yep, I was wondering about these things myself. The "union man" comments sounded waaaay too stereotypical, sort of like Wallace-Democrat stuff. The "I represent for 10,000 Asian people" comments were perhaps less obvious; I mean, I make a lot of errors when I write in a foreign language, too.
As for the Hillsboto event, I am bummed. I am an Obama supporter who wanted to see Hillary Clinton because, despite my electoral choice, I think she is an impressive woman. But a high school in Hillsboro instead of some place more reasonable for people throughout the metro area? Goofy. I have to assume it's all about $$.

Hillsboro is on the MAX blue line. Is the high school not near the MAX? I have no idea where this thing is.
Apr 4, '08
Easy on the 90 years old man will you. The vietnam war took my two legs, and many bullets still love to stay in my body. I did not learn English until I was 65. I'm not a perfect writer but I do hope to address my thoughts to someone who supports Hilary as well as Obama. The more we fight to elect the democrat, the more McCain winning his votes.

I am not voting for Hillary due to her consistent dishonesty and being financially supported by lobbists. See the link http://www.northstarwriters.com/dc163.htm

She has a long history of unethical behavior. Most of the posts that I have read reflect a blind support of her. It might be a good idea to do your research of her policy speeches and votes while in the Whitehouse and Senate before supporting her.
